Actions speak louder than words in deficit debate By Governor Bob McDonnell (R-V

Actions speak louder than words in deficit debate
By Governor Bob McDonnell (R-Va.) - 01/31/11

On Tuesday night, President Obama stood in the United States House of Representatives and delivered a speech calling for fiscal responsibility, deficit reduction and a government focused on freeing the private sector to create the good jobs our citizens need. The general philosophy advocated in the speech was hard for many to find disagreement with, and post-speech polling bore that out. A positive, upbeat speech extolling the merits of lower taxes, good jobs and optimism in America is what our citizens want to hear. But governing is about getting results, and Americans need to see action that matches the rhetoric.

As Governor of Virginia, I have worked with Republicans and Democrats to help navigate our state through these treacherous economic times. We have made progress. We cut $6 billion out of our last two budgets, reduced state spending to 2006 levels, and now have a $403 million surplus. We rejected tax increase proposals, cut spending, and focused our government on its core functions.

Since last February, Virginia has seen the fourth highest number of net new jobs created of any state, and our unemployment rate has fallen to 6.7 percent, ninth lowest nationally. Our governing model of fiscal austerity and strong support of the private sector has given the Commonwealth a small tailwind on the path to economic recovery. While our national challenges are much greater, I sincerely hope the President will choose this fiscal conservative model of governing, and not just of speechmaking.

As a Republican governor I appreciated the President's acknowledgements that small businesses drive our economy, the private sector must be bolstered to create good jobs, and the continuance of last decade's tax reductions will benefit all Americans. He spoke with needed clarity regarding the dynamic nature of this global economy and the furious economic competition between states and nations to which it has given rise. I strongly endorse his call for a reduction in the corporate income tax, and I certainly do not disagree that we need to "out-innovate, out-educate, and out-build" the world in the years ahead. Further, this Administration knows it has an ally in Richmond in the shared effort to provide more entrepreneurial and higher quality educational opportunities for all our young people.

There was much common ground to be found in the President's roughly 6,800 words of text. Unfortunately, specifics on policy were scant. The President touched on the negative impact that excessive and burdensome regulations can have on the businesses that create the jobs our citizens need. I applaud him for focusing on job creation, higher education opportunity expansion, and even tort reform. But will he earnestly pursue these commendable objectives?

The President spoke about the "mountain of debt" looming above our heads. Yet the most he could muster when it came to the difficult decisions that must be made to reduce the size of that mountain was a call to freeze domestic spending for the next five years. While this move would save $400 billion over the next decade, the only way out of this crisis will be through cutting spending. The Simpson-Bowles Debt Reduction Commission has given this President an initial list of items from which to choose in the pursuit of real debt reduction. Tuesday night was his opportunity to put the Presidential stamp of approval on a number of those proposals, and call for a bipartisan commitment to enacting them. It did not happen. It was an opportunity lost.

It was left to Congressman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin to level with the American people about the tough measures that must be taken to truly reduce our nation's immoral and unsustainable $14 trillion in debt.

However, in a politically split Washington, nothing of substance will occur without cooperation between the parties.

The American people certainly appreciate a bipartisan speech, but what they really need is bipartisan action in the much tougher task of getting our fiscal house back in order. The President's speech was well-received, now is the time for policies that are well-conceived. The months ahead will tell us much about whether or not this Administration is truly committed to the fiscal responsibility that is crucial to sustained job-creation and economic recovery.

Bob McDonnell is the 71st Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. He delivered the Republican response to the State of the Union in 2010.

Pro-Manufacturing Policies Will Put Virginians to Work By Lieutenant Governor B

Pro-Manufacturing Policies Will Put Virginians to Work
By Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling

Getting our economy moving again and creating jobs are the most important issues currently facing state government. Gov. Bob McDonnell has made me the point person in his administration for creating jobs, and my No. 1 priority is to make Virginia the best state in the nation in which to do business.

While we are targeting a number of strategic economic sectors as a part of our overall job-creation efforts, we want to make certain that Virginia continues to attract quality manufacturing companies. We need to be a state that makes things, not just a state that consumes things.

Virginia has a long tradition of supporting a thriving manufacturing industry. However, during the past decade, the manufacturing sector in America has shed 5.5 million jobs. Here, in the Old Dominion, our once thriving manufacturing sector has fallen on especially hard times.

Unemployment in manufacturing remains high, and our state trails only Ohio, Michigan and South Carolina in the number of manufacturing jobs lost in the past decade. We should be focusing our efforts on the re-establishment of these jobs with smart, pro-growth policies.

In the long term, we will reinvigorate manufacturing by taking a comprehensive approach. We intend to improve the tax and regulatory climate in our state so that we can better compete nationally and globally.

We also want to improve educational opportunities so businesses know that a skilled and educated work force awaits them if they invest in Virginia. And we want to provide the incentives that attract high-quality, advanced manufacturing business to the state.

In the near term, infrastructure investment is the quickest, most effective action we can take to restart manufacturing. By working with our partners at the federal level, we can invest in critical infrastructure by passing a federal highway bill that is responsibly funded, and we can do the same at the state level.

Infrastructure investment is a proven economic engine with lasting results. Not only does it drive growth, it creates lasting benefits. The U.S. Department of Transportation reports that 30,000 jobs are created for every $1 billion spent on highway infrastructure, yet we are spending less than 40 percent of what is needed to upgrade our surface transportation system nationwide. In fact, only 3 percent of the U.S. stimulus package was dedicated to rebuilding highways, roads and bridges.

By fast-tracking new construction projects, we can inject economic activity and create jobs in the building industry. Investing in infrastructure drives job growth, productivity and competitiveness in manufacturing. That's why I am supporting efforts like "I Make America" (www.IMakeAmerica.com) - a campaign by equipment manufacturers to urge Congress and the White House to work together to pass a federal highway bill.

For years, Virginia's leaders have talked about building a transportation system for the 21st century, but little has been done. We must improve our transportation infrastructure so our system of roads, rail and bridges can support the needs of Virginia businesses and residents.

This year, Gov. McDonnell has proposed an aggressive transportation plan that is designed to ease congestion and shorten commutes for working Virginians - and allow state businesses to take advantage of the economic opportunities afforded by a state-of-the-art transportation system.

Now is the best time in modern history for Virginia to get this done. Construction costs have fallen, interest rates are at historic lows and our residents need the good jobs that will come with infrastructure projects. The time to act is now.

Virginians need policies that will help them create jobs. Additional investment in transportation and infrastructure is essential to a healthy, growing economy. We must take these actions if we hope to put our families, friends and neighbors back to work.

Did Obama Forget About the Teachers Union?

When Obama started to speak about the need to improve education, upgrade our schools and attract quality teachers, an elephant appeared in the living rooms of most Americans who were watching. Obama never mentioned the beast, but most of the country saw clearly the three letters on his back -- AFT. American Federation of Teachers -- the union that, along with its counterpart, the NEA, National Education Association, has destroyed public education in America.

How can we take seriously any proposal to improve schools that does not deal with the force that has dragged them down -- the teachers union?

Detroit is a great example of the damage they have wrought. Due to the costs imposed by the union, the public school system has already had to close 59 of its 200 schools, and another 70 are slated for closure. The result will be eighth-grade classes of 40 children and high school classes predicted to have more than 60 students.

Why is Detroit in such bad shape? The same reason its car companies are broke: the unions. Not only do they get high salaries and benefits, but their union has a monopoly on health insurance coverage for teachers and marks the coverage up a third higher than private insurance companies with no better benefits -- and it's all paid by the taxpayer. Detroit will actually now have to pay teachers more to compensate them for their bigger class sizes.

In New York, it is almost impossible to fire an incompetent teacher. It took three years of litigation and $300,000 in legal fees to fire a teacher who sexually solicited a 16-year-old student.

Governors throughout the country are getting it, even if the president is not. Rick Scott in Florida, John Kasich in Ohio, Mitch Daniels in Indiana, Scott Walker in Wisconsin, Tom Corbett of Pennsylvania and Chris Christie of New Jersey have all proposed major new initiatives to promote school choice. (This week is National School Choice Week). They will promote private, parochial, charter, and virtual schools and home schooling, and provide vouchers and scholarships to permit the poor and middle class to afford them.

Over the next two years in these states, public schools will face real competition for students for the first time. Just as our colleges maintain standards of excellence in order to attract good students, so our lower schools will have to do the same.

As states grapple with intractable budget problems, the attractiveness of alternative schools that cost, on average, about one-third less than public schools will be irresistible. The teachers unions will run afoul of Margaret Thatcher's dictum that socialism cannot succeed because, sooner or later, "you run out of other people's money."

Missing from this list of innovative states, conspicuously, is New York state, where the state government is totally beholden to the teachers union. No experimentation, no opening of the system seems in the offing, and the Empire State appears to be content to continue its downward spiral. If they don't turn things around, they are headed for the same place as Detroit.

The real question is: Can our cities and states free themselves from the ropes with which the unions have bound them? The problem is that states cannot abrogate contracts. It's in the Constitution. But a federal bankruptcy court can. So to free ourselves of the ties that bind, we need Congress to create a procedure for federal Chapter 9 voluntary bankruptcy for states. When that initiative is coupled with the school-choice policies of the new Republican governors, the teachers union will have lost its power, and then we can have the kind of schools Obama professes to dream about. But not before.

Bill O'Reilly Winning the Future

Bill O'Reilly

Winning the Future

Finally, an issue all Americans can rally behind: winning the future! Surely most of us would like to be victorious down the road. The alternative is losing the future, and that doesn't sound very good, does it? If the future is lost, then what will become of us?

Thus, President Obama's new mantra, "winning the future," got immediate traction. His State of the Union speech was full of optimistic ways that we can win. Most of those ways involve "investing" in stuff like education, infrastructure jobs and alternative fuels. "Investing," of course, is the new word for government spending. The president doesn't want to spend anymore; he wants to "invest."

So Obama's speech was uplifting to say the least. We are going to beat those Chinese people in the marketplace, and our kids will be smarter than those Korean kids. Yes, we can! And the federal government's checkbook will lead the way.

In response, Republican Congressman Paul Ryan essentially said "no, we can't." We're broke. How uplifting is that?

Obama is a liberal man who is convinced that a large federal government can, indeed, improve the lives of most Americans. With a $14 trillion debt, however, Obama can no longer trumpet expanding the federal apparatus, but that doesn't mean he's against it. Let's take the high-speed train deal as an example.

The president loves the idea of these trains, and they do work well in places like Japan. But over the past 10 years, the government-run Amtrak outfit has lost an astonishing $13 billion. So what makes Obama believe that pumping even more tax money into high-speed rail will be good for the country? Talk about losing the past.

And then there's ethanol. Tons of federal money spent, little to show for it. T. Boone Pickens, a very savvy guy, tried wind power. He got blown away. The complexity of wind-driven energy makes it almost impossible to market.

As some of you know, I am a simple guy. My questions are not complicated. So here's another one regarding the winning thing: Didn't the Soviet Union want to win the future? I think they did. The pinheads in Moscow spent gazillions of dollars trying to dominate the world. And exactly how did that giant central government-run operation turn out? I believe it evaporated, did it not? Huge bureaucracies are not set up for winning the future. They exist to tell folks what to do and to take their money.

But the president and I do have some common ground on this "winning the future" theme. We are both for it. I, however, believe the folks are the key component to future success because they have repeatedly won in the past.

So let's stop the massive government spending, Mr. President, and unleash the American people by lowering taxes and encouraging private enterprise. Yes, we can.

Friday, January 28, 2011 Glenn Beck's State of the Union | Glenn Beck

Friday, January 28, 2011

This is a rush transcript from "Glenn Beck," January 27, 2011. This copy may not be in its final form and may be updated.

GLENN BECK, HOST: Welcome to "The Glenn Beck Program." Welcome.

If I were giving the State of the Union speech earlier this week, first of all, God help us because that would mean I was president, but Congress wouldn't know when to clap, because the speech would be free of politics -- because it's supposed to be the State of the Union, right? I mean, it's all about politics. The solutions to our problems have nothing to do with politics and everything to do with us.

When brawls break out, instead of breaking them out -- breaking them up now, people will see somebody slugging it out and they just get their cell phone out and start to videotape. And they hold it there. And then they put it on YouTube. And then those YouTube videos get millions of views.

Moms are now leaving young toddlers unattended so they get on fights in buses. This is shocking video.

Many of the top rated reality TV shows routinely now feature fights and they're treated as a matter of pride and not shame.

And then there's this -- among our nation's cops, there is an unsettling feeling that there is, quote, "a war on cops," end quote, right now. They say that they feel like they have become targets.

Officer fatalities in 2010 were 162, up 40 percent from the year before. 2011, not really off to a good start -- in the month of January alone, and check your calendar, gang, we're not in the end yet, there were 15 law enforcement officer fatalities. Another one just died -- eight different states. The latest came yesterday, Indianapolis Police Officer David Moore died after being gunned down at point blank. In one 24-hour stretch this week, 11 police officers have been shot in five different states.

And then you have violence all around the globe. You have the violent protest -- latest in Egypt, where three protesters and a police officer were killed.

There's been the violent riots in Tunisia.

There was a fire bomb explosion targeting a luxury hotel outside the World Economic Forum in Davos. Ya. A radical leftist group, calling itself Revolutionary Perspective, took credit for the explosion, stating, quote, "Our fight against the dictatorship of capital is focused on the social alternative to capitalism, communism," end quote.

Let me ask you this -- the world ignored Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda, until they finally took down the World Trade Centers. Will the world continue to disregard the communist, Marxist revolutionaries until they take down the world trade?

What we got the other night in Washington from our president and our Congress was the state of our politics. We know the state of our politics. You don't need -- it's not going to -- you're not going to hide it with a ribbon and sitting together. We know the state of the politics, it's about rhetoric.

But, what is the state of our Union? Tonight.

(MUSIC)

BECK: Hello, America.

Tonight, the state of the Union. Not politics.

You know what? Let's slow it down. Let me define Union here.

Union -- a combination so formed, especially an alliance or confederation of people, parties or political entities for mutual interest or benefit or agreement, harmony from uniting. Individuals, uniting individual, an alliance of people. It's what this is.

Are we a union anymore? The United States of America, a union. What are our principles that unite us?

Once upon a time, America was actually referred to as the melting pot. Do you remember this? Growing up, I used to -- I used to love these cartoons on Saturday morning, "School House Rock." This was all about the immigrants. And the immigrants all want to come to America and they are jumping in, and they're not jumping into the ocean, they are jumping into a pot. It's a melting pot.

And people come, all the differences and everything else, they come into the pot and they eventually wave the American flag because they were all in it together, no matter how different they were. They were different. But, at the end of the day, being an American was still a uniting concept.

Well, if we're no different than any other country, what unites us? Are we still a melting pot? Are we able to agree or disagree? At the end of the day, agree or disagree and still not view people as the enemy.

I want you to know, because I can feel it. I can feel it. I know when I talk about uniting, I know there are people that say, "Glenn Beck, how dare you say some" -- I know what people say. Most of the people that say those things have never actually watched episodes of the show. They don't know what I actually say.

You know that, because if you watch the show and you talk to your friends, you ask them what exactly -- and they can't tell you. They can tell you what they heard or what they saw a clip of. But they never watch the show.

I want you to know, there are enemies within our own borders. Did you see this FOX News exclusive today? An Iranian book celebrating suicide bombers has been found in the Arizona desert. Gee, you think?

Those are enemies. Those are enemies. Those who want to destroy our republic and destroy the melting pot itself, foreign and domestic, those are enemies. But we can have disagreements. We are all different, D's, R's, I's, but unless -- unless, we recognize there's a difference of opinion and then a difference of agenda.

The enemies of our country want to destroy the republic. Now you have to ask yourself, who is pitting us against each other? It can happen for many reasons. It can happen just for power, political power. It can happen for money. It's Bernays kind of stuff.

Why would we be pitted against each other? Is it on anything real?

Right now, we have -- being pit the rich and the poor, the wealthiest one percent, greedy bankers, doctors cutting off feet, evil oil companies. Big pharmaceutical won't make drugs. Fast food companies are trying to make you fat, you know? Conservatives just hate all minorities.

I don't know if you know this, but that person over there, they have it better than you. They have cable. You don't. Get 'em!

These are the kind of claims that are destroying the melting pot. I have news for you, there will always be rich and there will always be poor. There will always be black and white and brown.

There will always be Wall Street, but there will also be Main Street -- greedy bankers and good bankers, oil companies and solar panel companies.

Fast food companies that just want to make you fat and salad bars that just drive you out of your mind. Someone will always also always have something that you don't have.

Yes, Donald Trump has things that George Soros doesn't and vice versa. But they're not necessarily enemies over what they have or don't have.

We can't treat everyone as an enemy. We need to stop focusing on things that divide us, but the things that unite us -- as long as we all believe in the melting pot. There are principles that are worth debating with heated passion. Even Jesus turned over the tables in the temple. But unless our goal is to start violence or destroy the republic, we are not enemies of each other.

Another thing we must do if we're going to look at the state of our Union, what is going to hold us together is we have to stop injecting poison in ourselves. We have to look at that poison. I have don't think most Americans recognize some of the things that pass for entertainment on the TV is actually poison. This is the "Jersey Shore."

OK. The "Jersey Shore" just last week broke the viewing record, 8.9 million viewers on MTV. What drew a crowd like that? Well, quote, "Thursday's episode featured the aftermath of Snooki's arrest and release from jail for disorderly conduct." Oh, Snooki, did you do that?

Why would this crap attract 9 million people?

There is a split in America. Could it be a reflection of what we are allowing ourselves to become? To me, it's kind of a chicken and the egg thing. I don't know if it is leading or reflecting, but I will tell you this, it is giving us permission to celebrate our lowest base self.

But it's not the TV show. It's not MTV or the networks that do it. We shouldn't -- we definitely should never ban it.

What we need to do is stop making the lowest choice and reflect that. We don't need to be that.

What is missing in us or in our society? It ain't stuff.

I want to show you a video, and I'm warning you -- I think it make -- it makes me sick to my stomach. I had a hard time watching it. It's from Nebraska.

It's two women attacking another woman on a bus. It's a surveillance camera on the bus and it caught everything that happened. I want to show you.

The bus ride starts out normal. And here is this woman. Now, see these two people coming up and they start hitting this woman.

She was talking on her cell phone, two women start to approach her coming from the rear end of the bus. Seemingly unprovoked, suddenly, they attack her. The woman wearing the pink has left something behind to be able to go fight this woman.

What did she leave behind? Two children, is what she left behind. Then it's a free-for-all, punching and kicking, hair-pulling, and then it really gets bad.

Now, the young children are in the middle of all of this. The kids literally get caught in the crossfire. Sorry, CNN. The toddlers are left watching their mom beat is snot out of somebody and now they got mom cornered. What are the kids thinking?

And not a single person, this person or this person, have gotten up. How about this one? Right here with a child, not even reaching out. They just watch.

The bus driver finally stops the bus and then locks the door, waiting for the police to show up. But now, the woman in the pink finally decides to grab her kids. And escape out the window of the bus and eventually they do. And the victim leaves as well. There she goes. All before the police arrive. I don't even understand it.

Try this one. This one happened in the middle of Wendy's in Queens where a group of teenage girls mobbed a worker who got in there way.

It started when a group of teenagers were throwing food and fighting with each other, and that's when a young worker stepped in and tried to do the right thing and calm them all down. And, suddenly, one of the teens lashed out and the rest of everybody else just piled on the worker. The worker suffered a concussion. People just stood and videotaped the incident, not for police, they just posted it on YouTube.

But do you see anyone in the video stepping in to help?

Here's another recent one from South Carolina. This is at an IHOP restaurant. The video begins with two people in some sort of argument. It doesn't take long for the fighting to start. Then you'll see one guy show up with a cane. He shows with a cane here in a second.

There he is. Here he is with the cane and he just starts swinging.

People get up from their seats. The dining room is completely trashed. Again, people are just standing there just shooting video with their camera and cheering to fight on.

They all left. The restaurant was trashed. I mean, do I need to show you more? Because I can. I can show you black, white, brown, east, west, north, south, middle of the country, it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter.

But one thing they all have in common is they're all Americans.

Now, the politicians in Washington, their reaction to this, of course, will be "we've to ban posting things on YouTube." It's the same reaction they have with anything happens. Ban it.

Ban the things on the Internet? I got news for you. The Internet isn't the problem. Technology isn't the problem. It's what we do with it that is the problem.

You'll notice the name of this -- the name of this Web site is -- YouTube. "You." So, what are you using it for?

You can find all kinds of stuff on it. I mean, did you see over the holidays? Did you see the YouTubes where the people were just breaking out in the messiah and the hallelujah chorus in the middle of -- I mean, that was great stuff. You can find anything. You can find dopey inspirational videos on YouTube.

You can find this on YouTube. Uh-oh, E4, Wilmington, Education. You can find it.

The president today was on YouTube. You can find him. It's up to you.

Don't blame the technology. There's something wrong with us. Maybe it's the desire for fame at all costs. Not doing anything, not being famous because you work hard, being famous for beating somebody up.

Notoriety.

When you have the desire for fame and notoriety and you combine it with a complete lack of priorities and values and principle, you've got a mess on your hands.

Last night, I asked you -- what did you think on September 11th or September 12th was the most important thing? I can guarantee it wasn't fame, it wasn't notoriety, it wasn't any of those things. What was it?

I made my list yesterday on the board. It's on the other side. It doesn't matter. It's God, it's family, it's country. That's what I wrote down. That's what I knew was important on September 11th.

We were wounded on September 11th. But the state of our Union was strong. Suddenly, we didn't care about left or right. We didn't care about liberal or conservative. We cared about the truth.

We were all in a melting pot together. We knew we weren't going to make it without each other. We prayed together. We worried together. We stood together. We cried together.

Today, is God a top priority? Or how many followers do we have on Twitter? Is it family? Or is it the latest status update on Facebook?

Is it country? Or is it what stuff does he have that I don't have?

It's not YouTube or talk radio or cable news or anything that creates this mentality. We have played this video several times and it still amazes me each and every time. Listen.

(BEGIN AUDIO CLIP)

RADIO HOST: You know today how much money you're getting?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: No, I won't. But I'm waiting for a phone call.

RADIO HOST: Where is the money coming from?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I believe it's coming from the city of Detroit or the state.

RADIO HOST: Where did they get it from?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Some funds that was given by Obama.

RADIO HOST: And where did Obama get the funds?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Obama getting the funds from -- I have no idea, to tell you the truth. He's the president.

(END AUDIO CLIP)

BECK: They just got on. "Obama."

They don't know where the money to originates from. They don't say I need this money -- it's a difference between feeding my kids or not feeding them. They just want as they call it later in that, "Obama cash."

Now, I'm not just singling them out. They just happen to be on tape saying it. Everyone struggles with want and money, because there's always something out there that you can't get, but you want. You don't have the money for it.

I hate to beat a dead horse but this is exactly what Edward Bernays did to us beginning in the 1920s. His goal -- his stated goal was to take us away from a country that had control of themselves, and they bought what they needed, and focused us into a country that just focused on our wants.

Well, gang, we're here. That's what we are. That's what we are now.

And it's a road paved in fortune, and notoriety and instant gratification without a single exit or road sign for God, country or family. And when that happens you end up where we are, you end up in a place where you got a mom beating another person up on a bus in front of their children.

The state of our Union is not good -- unless we recognize it and recognize that government can never fix this. How do you unite people?

When it comes to this, I can't even begin to relate to somebody who will leave their child behind -- if you're in danger, that's one thing -- but to do his in front of your children. My gosh, that broke my heart. I am tired -- tired -- of being told that I have to understand why someone would do this.

I don't have to understand that. No, I don't. The only that needs to understand how they could do this is them. The only person that needs to understand it is them. This is not relative. It is criminal.

And as I mentioned at the top of the show, a spokesperson from the police officers union says officers all feel like there is a war on cops now -- 15 fatalities this month alone, 11 shot in 24-hour period this week. In 2010, cop killings were already up 40 percent. Why? Criminals say they no longer are afraid to kill cops. They wear it as a badge of honor, just to show how tough they are.

Do you know why you can shoot a cop or beat someone at Wendy's? Why you can call neighbors – neighbors -- enemies because they voted for a different person?

Because we no longer see people as human beings.

All of these officers were human, but the people who shot them only saw them as cops or a badge of honor or somebody standing in their way. For the majority of the population, cops have always been viewed are protectors. They certainly weren't in the South in the '50s and the '60s and even before then, but we now live in a system where bad cops go to jail.

And yet, there are still people that are pushing the view and indoctrinating that cops are just standing in the way. They're an oppressor for a system that's rigged against you.

If you watch this program, you know that anger is not accidental. Now, there is no evidence that any of these cops have been killed by radicals on the right or left. So far, it just seems like cold-blooded "get out of my way" kind of killers -- even though people on the right, a militia which we will talk about, have already called for the killing of cops. And so has the left.

I don't know which is worse -- those cops that kill for a distorted reason of politics or those that kill a cop just because they can. But I fear this is a precursor of things to come. And we must now take an inventory of ourselves and look at the real state of our Union.

Hard Reality

WASHINGTON -- This year's State of the Union address has been parsed, analyzed, applauded (80 times), celebrated and derided. The rhetoric has been described as "visionary" and "myopic." The president's promises and pledges have been depicted as "important" and "hollow." None of that really matters in the near term. What's most important right now is how the Obama administration handles the increasingly intense cries for greater freedom sweeping from Tunisia to Yemen -- threatening every authoritarian Muslim regime in that region save one: Iran's.

The theocrats in Tehran didn't foment the "Jasmine Revolution" -- the youth-driven popular uprising that forced Tunisia's Zine El Abidine Ben Ali to flee the presidential palace he occupied for 23 years. The unrest that drove Ben Ali into comfortable exile in a Saudi palace began as a protest against government corruption, high unemployment and a spike in the price of basic foodstuffs. But the ayatollahs are capitalizing on the expanding chaos.

Expatriate Iranian opposition figures claim that members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps' Quds force have been dispatched to Tunis "to help guide developments." And Tehran's government-controlled Fars News Agency has since quoted Jamil bin Alawi, a Tunisian "student activist," as saying, "The advanced revolutionary and Islamic models like the Hezbollah of Lebanon can provide a bright and promising prospect for Tunisia."

"Hezbollah" -- Arabic for "Party of God" -- is a word often in the news of late. The paramilitary/political/civic aid movement -- covertly originated, funded and directed by Iran since 1982 as a means of spreading a Shiite vision of Islamic revolution -- originally was confined to Lebanon. In 2006, well-armed Hezbollah militants, backed by Iran and supported by Syria, fought the Israeli army to a standstill. Rearmed and supplied by Iran, Hezbollah still controls south Lebanon to the Israeli border.

Two weeks ago, while Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri was in Washington for a meeting with Obama, Hezbollah brought down the Beirut government. This week, despite violent protests in Beirut and Tripoli, Hezbollah became an official part of the Lebanese government when Najib Mikati, its hand-picked candidate for prime minister, began forming a new government. The immediate effect was aptly described by an Al-Jazeera headline: "Lebanon convulses on 'Day of Rage.'" The protests continue.

The Iranians overtly have established "Hezbollah offices" in Syria, Sudan and Tunisia. Claims have been made in Web postings by Iranian officials that the organization also has a "presence" in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Yemen and Bahrain. Three weeks ago, when Muqtada al-Sadr, the radical Iraqi Shiite cleric and head of the anti-American "Mahdi Army," returned briefly to Iraq, he was greeted by supporters who proclaimed themselves to be members of "Hezbollah of Iraq."

During his SOTU address, Obama pledged, "This year, our civilians will forge a lasting partnership with the Iraqi people, while we finish the job of bringing our troops out of Iraq." Hezbollah of Iraq was apparently unmoved by this oft-reiterated commitment, insisting its goals remain "resistance and jihad to occupying countries" and warning "all U.S. citizens and foreign military personnel to leave Iraq immediately." Meanwhile al-Sadr has returned to his Iranian protectors, who persist in dispatching arms and insurgents to kill Americans.

In Egypt -- where riot police and the army are confronting angry protesters with tear gas, batons and gunfire -- the Iranians may well see another autocratic regime ripe for Islamic revolution. Student-led riots opposing the 30-year reign of President-for-Life Hosni Mubarak erupted Monday in Cairo and quickly spread throughout the country.

Unlike their counterparts in Tunisia and Lebanon, the Egyptian police and army thus far appear loyal to their leader, Mubarak, and the government has all but shut down press access and communications, including many Internet links. Current and former U.S. officials familiar with the situation in Egypt counsel, "Don't count Mubarak out. He's a survivor." But even the 82-year-old Mubarak must recall how his predecessor, Anwar Sadat, "left office" in 1981. It was during bloody carnage perpetrated by Muslim Brotherhood members in a military parade. Meanwhile U.S. vessels in the western Mediterranean have quietly delayed planned visits to Egyptian ports, and NATO officers in Naples, Italy, are dusting off plans for "noncombatant evacuation operations" -- just in case.

None of this, particularly what we know of Tehran's nefarious role in the region and nimble ability to exploit a crisis, bodes well for U.S. interests. Though Obama often claims -- as he did in his SOTU address -- the U.S. "supports the democratic aspirations of all people," his words ring hollow when contrasted with what he has done or is prepared to do. The Iranian regime, which brutally suppressed democratic aspirations of its own people in 2009, still provides a classic example of what happens when Utopian rhetoric confronts hard reality.

Waivers for Favors: Big Labor's Obamacare Escape Hatch

President Obama's storytellers recently launched a White House blog series called "Voices of Health Reform," where "readers can meet average Americans already benefiting from the health reform law."

I propose a new White House series: "Voices of Health Reform Waivers," where taxpayers can meet all the politically connected unions benefiting from exclusive get-out-of-Obamacare passes -- after squandering millions of their workers' dues to lobby for the job-killing, private insurance-sabotaging law from which they are now exempt.

At the end of last year, the Department of Health and Human Services had granted some 222 temporary waivers to businesses small and large, insurers, labor and other organizations that offer affordable health insurance or prescription drug coverage with limited benefits. On Wednesday, the agency quietly updated its online list, which now reveals a whopping total of 729 Obamacare escapees -- in addition to four states, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Ohio and Tennessee -- who collectively cover about 2.1 million enrollees.

At least one eyebrow-raising waiver recipient -- the left-leaning, nationalized health care-promoting Robert Wood Johnson Foundation -- has direct ties to the White House. Obama health care czar Nancy-Ann DeParle sits on the foundation's board of trustees.

Most noteworthy: One-fourth of all the waivers (182) so far have gone to Big Labor groups across the country.

The Teamsters Union, which hailed Obama last March for "enacting historic health care reform, providing health insurance to millions of Americans who don't have it and controlling costs for millions more who do," obtained waivers for 17 different locals.

The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), which celebrated the passage of Obamacare as "an achievement that will rank among the highest in our national experience," secured waivers for 28 different affiliates.

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers -- which exulted after the health care law's passage that "finally, affordable and comprehensive health care coverage will be available for millions of working Americans" -- saw eight of its affiliates win shelter from the Obamacare wrecking ball.

The Communications Workers of America, which sent its workers to lobby for Obamacare on Capitol Hill as part of the left-wing billionaire George Soros-funded Health Care for America Now front group, snagged a waiver that will spare a hefty 19,000 of its members from the onerous federal mandate.

And the Service Employees International Union, which poured $60 million into Democratic/Obama coffers in 2008 and millions more into the campaign for the federal health care takeover, added four new affiliates to the waiver list: SEIU Local 2000 Health and Welfare Fund, representing 161 enrollees; SEIU 32BJ North Health Benefit Fund, representing 7,020 enrollees; SEIU Local 300, Civil Service Forum Employees Welfare Fund, representing 2,000 enrollees; and SEIU Health & Welfare Fund, representing 1,620 enrollees.

That's in addition to three other previous SEIU waiver winners: Local 25 SEIU in Chicago with 31,000 enrollees; Local 1199 SEIU Greater New York Benefit Fund with 4,544 enrollees; and SEIU Local 1 Cleveland Welfare Fund with 520 enrollees. This brings the total number of Obamacare-promoting SEIU Obamacare refugees to an estimated 45,000 workers represented by seven SEIU locals.

Without the HHS-approved exemptions, these health providers would have been forced to drop low-cost coverage for seasonal, part-time and low-wage workers due to skyrocketing premiums. The only way they are keeping their health care is by successfully begging the feds to spare them from Obamacare.

The Democrats' law seeks to eliminate the low-cost plans (known as "mini-med" plans) under the guise of controlling insurer spending on executive salaries and marketing. The ultimate goal, as I've reported before: forcing a massive shift from private to public insurance designed by government-knows-best bureaucrats.

House and Senate Republicans plan separate investigations of the Obamacare waiver process. Who got one when and why? Who knew whom? Who didn't? HHS acknowledged Thursday that some 50 sanctuary-seekers had their waiver applications denied, but would not say more. Perhaps the White House storytellers, so eager to profile the "Voices of Health Reform," can enlighten us.

David Limbaugh Obama Believes American Exceptionalism Begins With Government

Obama Believes American Exceptionalism Begins With Government

Obama's latest watchword, "investments," is not, as I originally assumed, simply a euphemism for government spending. It captures his entire economic philosophy -- a philosophy that is permanently engrained in the core of his being and disastrous for America's "future."

President Bill Clinton shrewdly used the word as a more palatable substitute for income tax rate increases, saying taxpayers needed to "invest" more of their hard-earned dollars in America. But Obama's use of the term was different in two important ways. First, for him, "investments" would apply to the spending side of the fiscal equation. He would ask our support in his plan to "invest" more government money in infrastructure and education.

Secondly, and more significantly, Obama used the term to candy-coat his fundamental lack of confidence in the private sector and free market, as well as his commitment to faith in government as the primary engine for economic growth.

For all the analysis of Obama's speech, I don't think nearly enough has been made of this theme, which was interwoven throughout it. For it is the key to understanding that regardless of any promises he might make to move to the center, he will not do so willingly. It is also critical to comprehending why, despite the marked failure of his economic policies, he is virtually incapable of voluntarily changing course.

Obama's critics often say that it's important to pay more attention to his actions than his words. Though there is much validity in that, it's also true that we must not overlook his words, for he is not always careful to disguise his heartfelt views.

In his pre-speech teasers, Obama telegraphed that he would be emphasizing job creation. Indeed, he said that he saved the nation from economic collapse through his (atrociously wasteful and wholly ineffective trillion-dollar) "stimulus" bill. He insisted that he has succeeded in reigniting the economy but that the matter of job creation is an entirely separate process that will follow through his next round of magic.

He didn't bother acknowledging that he's played this same tune many times before (saying he wasn't focused enough on jobs but now he is) or that he specifically promised from the outset that job growth would result from his stimulus. But he did tell us multiple times in this speech how he envisions job growth finally coming about.

Yes, he rolled out the blame-Bush card again, but he also underscored the limitations of the free market to produce economic growth and employment. His entire "Sputnik" meme was based on this wrongheaded notion.

When the Soviet Union lurched ahead of us in the space race, America's leaders launched a national effort to surpass the Soviets. For Obama, by analogy, the federal government has to be the prime mover in leading and catalyzing America's comeback in education and in economic growth. We cannot understand Obama without recognizing that he believes the private sector can't create or innovate without paternalistic direction and googobs of money from the wiser beings in Washington.

"We know what it takes to compete for the jobs and industries of our time," he said. "The first step ... is encouraging American innovation." Note that he didn't mean "encourage" in the sense of getting government off businesses' and people's backs. He means the federal government should proactively prod, direct and lead us into the promised land of economic growth.

He credited government for providing money for "basic research" and "cutting-edge scientists and inventors" throughout history, without which the hand of the free market would have been not only invisible but also impotent. As a result, he pledged from his command-control perch to "invest in biomedical research, information technology and especially clean energy technology" (that PC token can never be omitted) -- "an investment that will strengthen our security, protect our planet and create countless new jobs for our people." So far, they've been "countless" indeed. This is just one example. Read the transcript and you'll see that throughout he betrays his blind faith in the indispensability of government action to job growth.

It would be bad enough if Obama's ideas merely retarded their stated goal of restoring job growth. But they necessarily involve Keynesian prescriptions of throwing obscene and budget-busting amounts of federal money at this ephemeral solution. Even if Obama wanted to reduce the deficit and debt, his economic philosophy would compel him always to spend more and would prevent fiscal responsibility.

If you listened to the speech and came away believing Obama is receptive to moving to the center, then you didn't hear or understand him. For the GOP to make headway on restoring fiscal sanity to this nation, it must first understand him. Then it must oppose and reverse him.

This is a rush transcript from "Glenn Beck," January 26, 2011. This copy may not be in its final form and may be updated.GLENN BECK, HOST: Welcome to "The Glenn Beck Program."

Over Christmas -- sorry, didn't mean to -- over winter solstice, President Obama vacationed in Hawaii. He was reading a book on President Ronald Reagan.

Now, I saw that over vacation and I went -- wow. I mean, he's a progressive who views the Constitution as a charter of negative liberties. I have a hard time believing he's reading Ronald Reagan but maybe -- maybe he'll get something out of it. That's great.

I think the president did -- but nothing about limited government.

Much of the Reagan talk that splashed last night in the State of the Union address didn't work. It rang hollow, because he was also at the same time talking about merging, not reducing the size of government agencies but merging them -- kind of into like a Department of Homeland Security on steroids.

That's great.

You know what happens when you take the ideas of limited government or the words of Ronald Reagan and then the progressive actions of Woodrow Wilson, this is what you get. And this is why the whole thing didn't work last night.

Here's Ronald Reagan yumminess and here's the Woodrow Wilson big government fish sticks. You put them too close together on a cookie sheet and they bake them to one ginormous cookie fish stick blob that nobody really wants to eat.

It doesn't work.

I like cookies. I like fish sticks. But they don't really work together.

This is the State of the Union last night.

So, I don't know what you saw, but this was not a move to the middle in words. It was -- it might be cookies to you, but it had a lot of fish in those cookies.

It was a campaign speech really. It was change and hope.

Did we learn our lesson? Will America wake up and see, wait a minute, he's not really saying anything here?

This speech, underneath, was as a radical of a speech that the president has ever given. I'll show you why and what he should have said. Oh, and I didn't forget about the chainsaw, the tree and the bunny either.

Come on. Let's go!

(MUSIC)

BECK: Hello, America.

Every single Reagan-esque ode to America Obama said last night was quickly followed by a but, but, but, but government is the answer. And we're going to have to invest billions of dollars. Yes. Yes. No, I don't -- no, I don't think.

And we got to invest billions of dollars and grow the size of government and merge government, but it's really all about you and the entrepreneurial spirit of America.

Yes. That didn't work for me.

We also heard about how great China is again and how we should -- this is one of the first things that popped out of the screen -- we should follow their lead on education and how they, quote, "started educating children earlier and longer."

Oh, well, that's great! What could possibly, possibly go wrong with taking our kids away from mom and dad even more of the day and just putting them in the big government hands of teachers union? No, seriously. That's going to be good. You watch, it's coming.

Obama also said we should be more like South Korea, where teachers are known as nation-builders. I don't want our soldiers known as nation- builders. Why would I want our teachers known as nation-builders?

Here in America, he said, it's time we treated the people who educate our children with the same level of respect.

I think when Joe Biden, he's looking over there and he's going, don't we already do that? Do you know anybody who doesn't respect teachers?

I actually feel bad for teachers -- I mean, the good ones. We should fire the bad ones, which he wouldn't say last night. But the good ones are stuck working the ones that we can't fire. I feel bad for them. I feel bad for them because they're actually working with the parents -- with the kids with parents who don't even care.

I don't know how they do it. But I have never ever heard anyone say this, "Oh, well, I'm just a teacher" or "She's just a teacher." I haven't heard that. But I have heard -- "Well, she's just a mom" -- or the worst one, "Well, I'm just a mom." I hate that. I hate that. Maybe we should elevate moms and dads.

Maybe the president needs to do a little more of this. This is him in the Oval Office. He's either sleeping or reading the plaque, like who is that? Or just thinking about Abraham Lincoln.

I think he should observe Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln said, "Everything I am, I owe my mother."

Even President Obama knows this. I think that he would agree that he got an awful lot from his mother. His mother influenced him a great deal. And he wrote about it -- he wrote a whole book about his dad in "Dreams from My Father."

So, please don't tell me about more respect for the teachers. How about we elevate our parents?

Last night, you heard the president say things like we need to out-innovate, out-educate, out-build the rest of the world. We have to make America the best place on Earth to do business.

Yes, we do! And regulation ain't the way to do it.

Here's why this failed to inspire, because he's talking about, not you the individual. He's talking about the government. It is the opposite of what Paul Ryan said later. See if you -- I was going to say hear a difference, but see if you feel a difference from the speech last night the president gave and just this one part from Paul Ryan:

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

REP. PAUL RYAN, R-WIS.: The principles that guide us, they are anchored in the wisdom of the Founders and the spirit of the Declaration of Independence and in the words of the American Constitution. They have to do with the importance of limited government and with the blessing of self-government.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BECK: I love that.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

RYAN: We believe that the government has an important role to create the conditions that promote entrepreneurship, upward mobility and individual responsibility. We believe as our Founders did, that the pursuit of happiness depends on individual liberty. And individual liberty requires limited government.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BECK: And personal responsibility.

I think he actually believes that, which is why I thought it was effective last night. The best line out of the speeches last night was that one, the blessings of self-government -- the importance of limited government and the blessing of self-government.

I didn't hear from the president. I heard words -- I heard cookies and fish sticks.

The president talked again last night about how great China is, not just because of keeping their kids in the training camps -- the schools -- longer in the year and longer days. But this time, it was about how bad we are, because they're building faster choo-choo trains than we are here.

He said -- quote -- "Our infrastructure used to be the best. Our own engineers have graded our infrastructure with a D and we need to do better."

OK. Let's start here. China, of course, builds stuff with ease. They practically have what progressives used to call slave and child labor.

So, they don't have any problem with it and they also don't have any environmental restrictions to worry about. They can dump poison into the river and it doesn't really matter. They're like, what are you going to do?

They don't care if they roll railroad tracks for new choo-choo trains right over caribou mating grounds and the slave labor and child labor camps.

But let's forget about that one. Let's see. He was talking about giving more money to infrastructure. May I remind you, I've heard this somewhere before, we looked it up. In fact, it was two years ago, he said this:

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: Next two years, this plan will save or create 3.5 million jobs.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BECK: Ahhh!

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

OBAMA: More than 90 percent of these jobs will be in the private sector --

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BECK: Ahhh!

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

OBAMA: Jobs rebuilding our roads and bridges, constructing wind turbines and solar panels.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BECK: They're everywhere.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

OBAMA: -- laying broadband, expanding mass transits.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BECK: It's crazy how that's been -- I don't think any of it has been done. Do you? I mean -- that was the point of the whole trillion dollar stimulus, right? Didn't we already spend $13 billion on fancy choo-choo trains last time?

If there -- last night was all about unity. I didn't get my little ribbon. But it was all about unity. And I think we can all unite on one thing, America doesn't need any more choo-choo trains. Enough.

Amtrak loses money on 41 of 44 routes and over $1 billion every year gone. You know why? Because nobody is riding it! Making them faster isn't going to help.

Let me show you how the choo-choo train thing works. Here's the tracks. Oh, look at this. Fly California. Isn't that nice? And here's a

-- well, here's a cargo train. It's great.

Now, let me show you what happens. Here in America, because that's what we're talking about, not that fancy Europe or China -- here in America, we have one set of tracks and a choo-choo train is carrying all of our stuff is using this track -- and so are the really fast bullet trains. Uh-oh. Choo-choo!

That's why we don't build them here. We have to lay another whole set of track for the fancy choo-choo train. Also, if it doesn't go that way, then it would go this way. Here's the choo-choo using the same tracks. Bullet train going the same way. Bullet train coming really fast. This one is not going fast, really fast.

You see? That's how trains work. Choo-choo trains.

I think we're going to take that jet airplane. Yes, because the choo-choo that goes really fast and costs us a lot of money has to slow down. Chuga-chuga, choo-choo.

How do I know all this stuff? Just the GAO, that's it.

Government Accounting Office, they can't put price tag on this, because they say the high speed rail is going to require new safety rules -- oh, regulations -- constant public capital investment and operating subsidiaries. Constant. And balance that with freight rail service and the rest of the national transportation system, the planning necessary to meet the many concerns the GAO says. So, you can't trust this. Only the Government Accounting Office says it hasn't even occurred.

Choo-choo!

Could we do this? Let's fix reason firmly in her seat for a minute. Let's look at the country like this -- you're a shareholder. You're an owner, OK? Part owner.

And you hired this guy to run the country and he came in two years ago and said, I know it's going to be tough for you to swallow because even Dr. Evil said, $1 billion. They said, no, that's not a lot of money. He said, oh, $100 billion. He was only tenth of a way to trillion. I know it's a hard number to swallow, but I need $1 trillion to fix the infrastructure and new choo-choo trains. We're also going to do all kinds of new green jobs.

He knew then that he was going to have to come back here and meet with you, the shareholder in two years. Now, if I were that guy, I would have looked at my team and said, I have to face these people in two years. I got to show them that they just invested $1 trillion to revolutionize something. What do I do? Because I got to knock -- I'm not going to be able to knock it out of the park everywhere, but I got to knock it out of the park somewhere. Can you help me with that so I don't look like a dummy two years later?

Shareholders are going to kind of expect a business plan. Maybe a return on their trillion dollars. No, what does he do? No, he doesn't.

Uh-oh.

Where is the -- where is the place that he's transformed? Because last night, I don't know if you heard it, I kind of went like this -- did he just ask for double down on the stimulus to fix the same problem that he got the money for the last time?

That's not a business model. That's suicide.

If you want to talk about future being green jobs, well, you said it two years ago. In fact, do you remember this example? Solyndra. Oh, here he is. Let me hold up this solar panel here. Wow, it's quite light. That's fantastic. Hmm, I think it is, light enough to be the future. Green jobs are the answer! This company was fantastic.

He did this story and he's bragging about it -- two years ago.

Now don't you think that after learning so much stuff about this light, black thing I'm holding up here and shaking that person's hand, don't you think that maybe I should come back to the American people, because I held it up as if we could just help this country, this company is getting half a billion dollars in stimulus money, I got to show how great they are now, because you remember them two years ago. Yes, he didn't do that. He didn't do that, because that company had to lay off workers and close factories after getting half a billion dollars.

It's that much of the company of the future.

So, what did he do? Well, he couldn't talk about that company, so he had to give a shout-out -- and I'm not kidding you -- to two guys in a shingle company. Whoa! Shingles? Two guys and shingles.

You are giving me the shingles, President Obama!

I don't know about you, but if I spend $1 trillion, I think I need a full report on what the money is doing -- the charts, the stats, the graphs, you know, not just, hey, I got two guys and who we're living the dream on your dime making shingles.

Not an investment. It's a scam.

The president has also announced he would be investing in biomedical research. Can anybody find that one in the Constitution? Oh, and information technology, especially clean energy and technology.

All right. Let's take these apart one at a time, shall we?

Biomedical, Maybe it's just me as an American citizen, but I don't want the government now dabbling with creating our drugs, period.

Information technology? I don't know, thought we're doing pretty good with Steve Jobs. Bill Gates is doing good, you know? Newcomers coming in that field all the time. I think we're good. Have you seen the iPhone? Next to post office. I'm going with Apple on that one.

By the way, the new Internet bill being pushed, the one with the "kill switch" so the president can just shut down the Internet anytime he feels it's necessary contains new language. They rejected it last time.

This language this time says that the federal government's designation of vital Internet or other computer systems -- quote -- "shall not be subject to judicial review."

Oh, that sounds great. I mean, sure, at first I didn't want the government involve, but then they said no judge can do anything about it. I'm in.

How do I sign up?

What was it the president said about Tunisia? This one kind of rang true to me -- quote -- "The will of the people proved more powerful than the writ of a dictator." I bet the will of the people worked again.

Green technology. The president once again vilified oil companies last night. He wants us to stop using it and turn to wind and solar. All we need are some of those light black solar thingies right here on this high-speed train. It's going to be great. It's going to be cost effective, too.

Now, we all know that green energy isn't cost effective. So, how did the president last night decide to solve that problem? He said he wants to raise taxes and penalties on people that are using that old fashioned technology.

Oh, that sounds -- that sounds insane.

Let me show you how far away we are from using wind and solar panel. May I just point this out? Right now, all of the energy, all the electricity we get, we get 0.6 percent from wind. For those who went to public school, that's less than 1 percent.

Now, how about solar? Point -- are you ready -- 0.1 percent. Those two combined, not 1 percent of our energy comes from solar or wind.

How much do we get -- are you ready for this one? We get 2 percent from wood. From wood! Who besides the Amish and brick oven pizza places are using this for energy? Who?

We get double the amount of energy with this than a new green solar and wind power. Yes.

What do you say we -- what do you saw we work on that one a little bit longer before we take oil away, you know, and coal? Because I think that's kind of like the idea of our military just trashing all of our fighter jets and, you know, the vehicle and the armor and the GPS missiles and this stuff and say, you know, what we're going to do? We're going to rely -- we're just going to use the Millennium Falcon and the force as our primary defense. I just got to point out, that was a movie. And so was "An Inconvenient Truth."

I don't know how you can spend vacation reading President Reagan's words and missing the whole point, but he did it. So, let me remind him the words.

Mr. President, the government is not the solution to our problem. The government is the problem.

Here's an idea -- let we the people sort it out. If someone creates cars that run on chief magic fairy dust, guess what? We're all going to be driving fairy dustmobiles real fast.

He tried to channel Reagan. He said -- quote -- "What America does better than anyone else is spark the creativity and imagination of our people. We are the nation that put cars in driveways and computers in offices." He said, "We're the nation of Edison and the Wright brothers and Google and Facebook."

Let me ask you something: where any of these people, do they work for a government agency? Were they getting subsidies? I mean, besides Google here, honestly. I mean, they're now -- do you hear this? This is kind of spooky. Google is now partnered with the NSA. Hmm.

Oh, well, go back to sleep, America. In many cases, these guys, the government tried to shut those people down.

Let's not confuse thinkers and creators and inventors with the government. The government does not create.

Do I need to go over the trillion dollars we spent on the choo-choos and the infrastructure again? I mean, we could. How about the post office? No, I think you get it.
