Passive smoking doesn't cause cancer - official

THE world's leading health organisation has withheld from publication a study which shows that not only might there be no link between passive smoking and lung cancer but that it could even have a protective effect.

The astounding results are set to throw wide open the debate on passive smoking health risks. The World Health Organisation, which commissioned the 12-centre, seven-country European study has failed to make the findings public, and has instead produced only a summary of the results in an internal report.

Despite repeated approaches, nobody at the WHO headquarters in Geneva would comment on the findings last week. At its International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, France, which coordinated the study, a spokesman would say only that the full report had been submitted to a science journal and no publication date had been set.

The findings are certain to be an embarrassment to the WHO, which has spent years and vast sums on anti-smoking and anti-tobacco campaigns. The study is one of the largest ever to look at the link between passive smoking - or environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) - and lung cancer, and had been eagerly awaited by medical experts and campaigning groups.

Yet the scientists have found that there was no statistical evidence that passive smoking caused lung cancer. The research compared 650 lung cancer patients with 1,542 healthy people. It looked at people who were married to smokers, worked with smokers, both worked and were married to smokers, and those who grew up with smokers.

The results are consistent with their being no additional risk for a person living or working with a smoker and could be consistent with passive smoke having a protective effect against lung cancer. The summary, seen by The Telegraph, also states: "There was no association between lung cancer risk and ETS exposure during childhood."

A spokesman for Action on Smoking and Health said the findings "seem rather surprising given the evidence from other major reviews on the subject which have shown a clear association between passive smoking and a number of diseases." Roy Castle, the jazz musician and television presenter who died from lung cancer in 1994, claimed that he contracted the disease from years of inhaling smoke while performing in pubs and clubs.

A report published in the British Medical Journal last October was hailed by the anti-tobacco lobby as definitive proof when it claimed that non-smokers living with smokers had a 25 per cent risk of developing lung cancer. But yesterday, Dr Chris Proctor, head of science for BAT Industries, the tobacco group, said the findings had to be taken seriously. "If this study cannot find any statistically valid risk you have to ask if there can be any risk at all.

"It confirms what we and many other scientists have long believed, that while smoking in public may be annoying to some non-smokers, the science does not show that being around a smoker is a lung-cancer risk." The WHO study results come at a time when the British Government has made clear its intention to crack down on smoking in thousands of public places, including bars and restaurants.

The Government's own Scientific Committee on Smoking and Health is also expected to report shortly - possibly in time for this Wednesday's National No Smoking day - on the hazards of passive smoking.

GLENN BECK, HOST: Welcome to "The Glenn Beck Program."

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving. I mean, we could stay and just continue to eat, but maybe we should get back to reality.

The problems aren't going away. In fact, they're getting bigger. The government's tiny Band-Aid on the massive mortgage market is beginning to peel off. The real bleeding is about to begin.

New home sales continue to plummet. Inventory continues to rise. And sale prices continue to drop.

The E.U. over the weekend bailed out Ireland to the tune of $113 billion. The stock market tumbled on fears that the rest of the Euro Zone may not be far behind. They're right. Portugal is next, and then Spain.

North Korea and South Korea — dangerously close to escalating violence.

And America has suffered an embarrassing leak of classified information via WikiLeaks. According to some reports today, this is the largest loss of sensitive information by a world superpower in all of human history.

But the question: What did we learn from these? Is there anything new here?

I've seen much of what is out there and I've heard the people on TV talk about it. This is merely serving as confirmation of what you already knew, that the government is lying to you.

I've said it before. The perfect storm — well, this is what I said before — a perfect storm is coming. Let me change that. The perfect storm is here.

Al-Qaeda announced their perfect storm strategy. It's called "operation hemorrhage." What does it mean? Death by a thousand paper cuts. We will bleed to death.

Let's not pour lemon juice on the paper cuts. Instead, let's look at what is really going on. Blow the smoke of the media away and get to the truth. Why are these secrets being revealed today? And who is really involved?

Come on.

BECK: Hello, America. Glad you're here.

I never treated you like a moron, mainly because I don't believe you are a moron. And since I — because I believe those things, I don't always take time to fill in the blanks on what I believe you already know or it is your responsibility as a citizen to find these things out.

My comments because of this are routinely taken out of context. The irony is, of course, it is done so by people who do think you are stupid — people like Howard Dean who recently admitted as much. Listen to this:

HOWARD DEAN, FORMER DNC CHAIRMAN: What I think I would do is, first, I would be bring back the Fairness Doctrine, so you couldn't have spectacle of a Fox flooze, which makes stuff up and as a propaganda outlet. You actually have to have some sentient human beings talking to the other side. And it would serve — MSNBC would have to do the same. It would have to have some conservatives on there, too. I think that's much better for the country. Americans don't know what's going on and therefore, the media can have their way with them intellectually.

(END AUDIO CLIP)

BECK: I would ask Mr. Dean to help me out. What is it that we make up?

I would ask you to just take a moment here. Do you really believe that I could or anybody here at Fox News could just make things up and remain on the air?

No. You're not a dummy. I do expect you to know what's going on, because nefarious people will have their way with dummies. And I guarantee what I will say tonight will be taken out of context.

Listen carefully. Do your own homework.

There is no other television show — the reason why we make ground — there is no other television show I think in the history of news broadcast that has a 20-minute monologue like I do. I can lay an awful lot of stuff out in 20 minutes. They can chop it up any way they want and play 30 seconds of it and make it in to anything.

Here's Howard Dean calling for a Fairness Doctrine to return and then some — so the government can force sentient human beings to be put on the air.

I warned you that there will come a time when radicals see an opportunity to take us non-sentient human beings down and they will dog pile. And when that happens, the ends will justify the means and you won't be able to trust anything.

How long ago did I tell you everything that you thought you could count on, you will not be able to count on? Everything you thought was solid will be liquid and vice versa?

Now is the beginning of that time. When you watch the coverage of the WikiLeaks story, I don't want you to just — to go with the media storyline. It's not enough.

They're not telling you everything — they're not even asking the right questions. It is as simple as they are making it out to be. These are tough adult questions that need to be asked.

Media has boiled it down to this: the guy who leaked the information — bad. Punish him. Shout them down. Shut him down. Put them all in jail.

Well, you know what? He probably should go to jail and probably tried for treason. But that to me is not the important part of the story today. We need to look into the story deeper.

What is it that he has released? Really, what has he released? Let's start with that and then ask some questions. Well, what did he release that we didn't already know? You tell me.

Here's one thing that was releases. Iran smuggled arms to Hezbollah during Hezbollah's war with Israel. I knew that. I talked about it on the television show and my radio show. I was called a fearmonger for doing that.

The leaks show that North Korea supplied Iran with a cache of advanced missiles based on a Russian design much more powerful than anything that Washington has publicly conceded that Tehran has in its arsenal. Did you know that? If you watch this show, you did. The leaks further suggest a possible nuclear weapon cooperation between Iran and North Korea. Does that surprise anyone? Isn't that axis of evil?

The leaks also showed China is conducting computer sabotage. Hmm.

That the U.S. is close to the edge with Pakistan.

That the U.S. officials called Putin the alpha dog leader in Russia, and that the Saudis remain the chief financier of al Qaeda. Oh, and, by the way, they also tried to get to us attack Iran because they fearing for their own butts, getting in the crossfire of Iran-Israel showdown.

Nothing — nothing in this report so far is shocking. It's all stuff that you already knew because you watch this show, or because you're not a moron. You knew it in your gut.

But there are things that the government is telling you that are not true. Isn't that the maybe surprising thing here? Don't trust the government. George W. Bush was looking in Putie Put's eyes and saw a good man. But behind the scenes, they are saying that these guys are thugs and the alpha dog is controlling it. Really? I thought he was our friend.

We're holding hand and playing footsy with the Saudis. We're so careful not to offend any of them. We won't allow investigations into the Saudi-funded school in Virginia that has produced at least two students who are arrested on terror threats — but Saudi Arabians are our friends.

We can't even look at the curriculum at this school that teaches students that it's OK for Muslims to kill adulterers and converts from Islam. Yet, they remain the chief funder of al Qaeda and the government knew that. So did you, in your gut.

Publicly, politicians want to sit down and chat with dictators like Ahmadinejad and Kim Jong-il, even though privately, we now know they are working behind the scenes to help out Iran go nuclear.

China is conducting super computer sabotage, or computer sabotage. Do you remember the story that didn't make any sense to us? The president, himself, President Obama said that they were going to stop looking in to computer attacks from China? Do you remember all of us saying, what?

Ask your friends this question, because if you've done what I've asked you to do: protect your integrity. Do not take my word. Never trust me on anything. I don't ask for your trust.

I give you information. And I tell you, you can find all of this information from reliable sources. Go to the library. Look it up.

Ask your friends if you protected your integrity and you've only told them the truth, how many times do you have to be right? How many times does the show have to be right before Americans start listening to either the show or more importantly, to their gut and not to the clowns in Washington who are lying to you?

We have told you all of these things. You have checked them out and verified them on your own. And you told your friends.

We gave you as much confirmation as we could at the time. I ask you to do your homework and make sure you're not relying on anyone but your own gut and your own knowledge. Know what you believe, because there is coming a time where you will have to be dependent on, people will have to — they won't trust anyone.

Are you conducting your life in such a way where they will trust you? Get rid of all of the lies in your life. Never go on someone else's information.

So, now, what happens from here? Well, I've told you the theory. Top down, bottom up, inside out, right?

It actually is top down — you put the radicals up here at the top. And then you have — well, I put the labor unions down here. You have the real radicals that everybody knows that causes the chaos in the street. And the average American is here.

And when top — top comes down, when the bottom starts to rise up and cause trouble, putting pressure on you through chaos. Turn you inside out. And then you beg for the top to make it go away. You coordinate with the union and the revolutionaries on the street and that's what you're not supposed to know, that these guys are connected to these guys.

This is what led to Czechoslovakia and turned them into a communist country in 1948 — bottom up, top down, inside-out.

It's, in fact, what Van Jones preaches today. Watch.

VAN JONES, FORMER GREEN JOBS CZAR: You handle the top down, but it's also bottom up and inside out. Top down, bottom up, and inside out. So, now, your challenge as you leave here, our challenge, is to take care of the bottom up part.

BECK: That's what they're doing.

The inside-out part is the chaos, the leaks. The leaks — what does it do? It creates distrust in our government. It creates distrust in everything. It adds instability all around in an already shaky globe.

How do we now negotiate with other countries when we have turned everything inside out? And what you're seeing on television now is just adding smoke.

The media is leading the charge, begging, begging for the top down! Come down, do something. WikiLeaks — WikiLeaks is coming up. Stop them!

Don't. Before you beg for someone to step in, let's take a deeper look at who these people are. And we're just beginning to scratch the surface. The WikiLeaks guy, who is he? He's on the bottom. Is he in league with anyone?

Well, let's start with the private who leaked the information to WikiLeaks. What do we know about him? He's a 22-year-old intelligent analyst, Bradley Manning.

Well, let me show you some of his supporters because his supporters are very, very, very interesting. First of all, you have Code Pink. Whose other endeavors include supporting the terror group Hamas. You remember the flotilla? Yes.

Wait a minute. The flotilla — the flotilla was Bill Ayers, Code Pink, Bernardine Dohrn. Oh, yes, they're all connected to these guys. That's right.

And then you have Noam Chomsky, he's the anti-free market — let's call him a communist because he is.

And then you have the anti-free market, Cuba-loving Michael Moore, the America-bashing radical leftist Daniel Ellsberg, and, of course, MDS.

Now, what is MDS? MDS sounds an awful lot — oh, look at the logo! MDS is SDS. This is the adult counterpart of SDS, the violent student group started in the '60s — started in the '60s, started in the `60s. Oh, yes. Started in the `60s by this guy. And then you also have the — you also have the ANSWER Coalition, and Veterans for Peace.

Now, this is just — these are the people who just support this guy. What a coincidence. It's a real coincidence because if you look at the groups involved with this rally, you'll notice that they are all the same. Code Pink, Veterans for Peace, ANSWER Coalition and you know what's really strange about that is they got their funding from the Tides Foundation. And the Tides Foundation gets much of their funding from George Soros, which is weird, through OSI.

Oh, by the way, this guy, the guy who founded SDS, he runs OSI for George Soros. Isn't that weird?

Now, Manning expected fall-out. And here's how he predicted it and described it, quote, "Everywhere there is a U.S. post, there is a diplomatic scandal that will be revealed. It's open diplomacy, worldwide anarchy in CSV format. It's a climategate with a global scope, and breathtaking depth. It's beautiful and horrifying."

Now, for those of you who don't know what CSV is? Because I didn't — it's a computer file format.

How many people do you know describing anarchy as, quote, "beautiful and horrifying"? These people do. There's one circle of radicals who view the world in a similar fashion. The man behind the WikiLeaks page and all of these leaks — currently hiding out in Britain. Do you know who his attorney is?

OK, here's the guy who's running WikiLeaks. And that is his attorney, Mark Stevens.

Mark Stevens is so weird, happens to do pro bono stuff for George Soros and the Open Society Institute. Isn't that weird?

When the founder of WikiLeaks set out to establish funding for WikiLeaks, guess who he negotiated with? The Open Society Institute, George Soros. That's strange, isn't it?

Wow! Man, we should call for the top down, shouldn't we? Because the bottom is rising up. I have wonder if anybody in the administration could help us with the Internet.

WikiLeaks wrote an award-winning report called "The Cry of Blood." This is great. "The Cry of Blood." The report was published by the Kenya National Commission of Human Rights. George Soros.

WikiLeaks once listed Soros connected Chinese human rights leader as one of its advisors. Well, I say once listed them because they scrubbed the Web site. Oh, too bad for WikiLeaks and George Soros and everybody else, too bad we have watchdogs that printed everything before it was scrubbed from the Web. Hmm.

I want you to listen carefully because this monologue is going to be taken out of context. Here's what people are going to say. "Glenn Beck says George Soros is behind WikiLeaks." That is not what I am saying. Could I make it any clearer?

George Soros' Open Society Foundation came out in August and said it was not taking a position on the WikiLeaks documents. But it opposed any and all disclosures about identifiable civilians that would put them at risk. That's because Open Society has an interest in Afghanistan.

But have you noticed — have you noticed they're not taking a position on this? And it's the same group of people, Marxist, anarchist, Code Pink, Michael Moore, everybody.

I want you to hear this clearly. I do not believe in a "Star Chamber." I don't think Michael Moore is calling George Soros and George Soros is getting on the phone and telling Cass Sunstein — they're not doing that. These people are not secretly meeting and telling each other what to do or giving each other directions.

What I'm talking to you about is what al Qaeda is calling "operation hemorrhage" for their part. What I have called the perfect storm, where like-minded people, people who want to destroy the republic, seize an opportunity. And the window for opportunity for anarchy and chaos on this planet, to overthrow our system here and the system abroad is now. And it's not just Soros who would like to change the system.

There is more to this story than just a disgruntled 22-year-old soldier who wants to make a name for himself. Again, the kid describes world anarchy as beautiful and horrifying. And remember, these leaks don't teach us anything new. All they do is create, like he said, anarchy and chaos around the globe.

Well, what was step three of George Soros' plan for overthrowing countries, if you remember from this program about a month ago? Step three was — there it is — destabilize the state, create anti-government sentiment. Hmm.

Does this destabilize the state? You damn right it does. Does it cause anti-government sentiment? Yes! It's not really hard to do these days, is it?

I want you to check this video out. It's a socialist that the "The Blaze" posted last week. He's saying that the time for revolution is now. Find it at TheBlaze.com.

It's not just George Soros or Wiki or any group of people that want us to, you know, collapse, make waves and create confusion. It is "operation hemorrhage," death by a thousand paper cuts. And it's not just one group trying to do it.

But remember this — we surround them, it's an illusion. Just don't cry for the top to come down and protect you, oh, because they will.

The last question I have for you is: who can you trust? May I suggest that you trust yourself? That is what WikiLeaks should have taught you. And then do what Shelley Winters and Ernest Borgnine did in the "Poseidon Adventure." They followed this man.

BECK: May I suggest that you become him? There are those intentionally creating chaos and there are those who will just stand there in the ballroom with the ship upside down. And they will wait for help while others try to destroy the free-market system and replace it their socialist utopia.

Have truth in your life. Put yourself in a position to be independent and strong and a leader. Do not be the one stranded when the water comes pouring in. Instead, the one that lead others to the surface.

If you're anything like me, you spent Thanksgiving eating your face off, and then you — and then you said, no, I can't eat another bite. And then you retired to the other room where you just let your stomach go for a while. And then strangely, about an hour later you're like, is there anything to eat anywhere?

But what else did you do? If your family is still there, I'm going to
— I'm going to — I want you to talk on this show. If you are DVR-ing the show — good. Feel free to pause it and have a conversation about it because that's really what we need to do. We need to have more conversations in this country among the people that we love.

How many of us talk about things that are meaningless? But things are about to change. And we need to lead that change.

I saw a piece of video that I know that everybody — because everyone on the planet has yelled at me and said, "Oh, gee, Glenn, that's Oprah Winfrey. You can't pick on Oprah Winfrey, because those people are really excited about getting new stuff and stuff." I'm like, really?

Watch the audience as they are on Oprah Winfrey and they find out that she's going to do her — I don't know, favorite things show and they're going to get her favorite things. Watch this audience.

BECK: Now, we want a new car. That's cool and everything. But watch.

BECK: OK. Now, it's starting to get spooky. It goes on and on and on. People are down on their knees and they're praising God and everything else.

And I mean, I — look, I never won a car. And I got to believe I'd be going, yes, Oprah, I love you! But it seemed — is it just me? I mean, when nobody here is winning a car.

(LAUGHTER)

BECK: You've won a brand new pencil! Yes. I mean, is it just me? It just seemed over the top.

Here we are on Black Friday. You know, the original Thanksgiving happened on, I think it was December 18th in the 1700s, after our country was founded. And they said, let's have this Thanksgiving. And they said, even harmless recreation shouldn't be done, because we should be falling to our knees and giving thanks to God for everything that we have.

But what we have I think is maybe is leading us — what we have is what we're worshipping now. There are Black Friday camp-outs. Do we have pictures of the Black Friday camp-outs?

There have been couples that are in this tent and they've been there for like a week-and-a-half. They got their stuff. Yes, look at me! I'm going to get stuff!

Apple iPhone lines — I've never understood the Apple iPhone. Here's this — the Apple store in Manhattan, and dopes line up for the new apple iPhone. I mean, you can buy them without camping out in like two weeks. I mean, what's? Really!

What is — what is happening to us? What's happening to us? Do you remember the people that were in Detroit and had the Obama cash? Remember I played this audio for you. Do we have what audio?

Here's the — here's what people in Detroit, they lined up to get free cash. They didn't even know what it was. But listen to the joy in their voice:

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I don't know, his stash? I don't know. I don't know where he got it from, but he's giving it to us to help us. We love him. That's why we voted for him! Obama! Obama!

BECK: I don't — gosh, I hope I never worship stuff like that.

You know, Rabbi Lapin was on a couple of weeks ago and we were talking about the story of the Tower of Babel and what binds us. Remember, the Tower of Babel story was about Nimrod, the king, the hunter of men, and he made everybody into bricks. In other words, they weren't stones.

I mean, if you're going to look at — if stones, stones are more like people. Stones can be like this. They're all different. And they're made individually. No two alike.

If you notice — fingerprints, no two alike. Nobody. Even identical twins have different fingerprints. And it's interesting, because our fingerprints, it's our hands. It's what we do. It's what we create. We create with our hands. And they're all different.

But Nimrod wanted to make all of us the same, into bricks. And then he used mortar. If you remember what Rabbi Lapin said, the Hebrew word, really, mortar is materialism. Materialism is what held everybody together as bricks. They're stuff.

Let me show you something that is in "Broke." This is a book that — I mean, you don't need stuff, but you definitely need to run to the store and buy this.

(LAUGHTER)

BECK: I've been saying for a couple of weeks — if you just go stand in the bookstore and you just read the first couple of pages, I can guarantee you that you will buy this book and you will have it on your shelf and you will use it for years to come.

Just in the first couple of pages, the first chapter is "Ancient History, Modern Lessons." And it talks about ancient Rome. We're going to do a show I think next week on ancient Rome and parallels of ancient Rome. They're spooky. We are repeating everything ancient Rome did.

But in the — I think it's on page six, page seven, is in those in the city in ancient Rome got an increasing amount of government hand-outs for their money, a practice that was part of a long-term plan to make people forget about the history. So, they were trying to figure out — they were trying to make people forget about what was going on. And so, they gave the people, particularly in the cities, more money.

According to Gibbon, the guy who wrote "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire," which was, what, in the 1700s that he wrote, he said, "It was artfully contrived by Augustus that the enjoyment of plenty would make the Romans lose the memory of freedom."

The enjoyment of plenty would make us — would make them forge forget freedom. That's intense. Think about that.

There would be a place, jut give me like five more seconds and then stop and talk about this amongst yourself, with your family. How much did we even know about our own history two years ago? And why?

Why did we not learn it? Why didn't we know? Why didn't we explore?

Why didn't we ask more questions about the Patriot Act? Why didn't we ask more questions about what's really going on with our finances and how can we possibly afford Social Security, Medicare and now, health care and everything else? How come we didn't ask these questions earlier?

Because of our stuff. We were held together by stuff, by entertainment, and I was going to say because of yesterday, food — entertainment and stuff. If we are hungry — and I've told you before that inflation is coming — if we're hungry, what binds us? If we don't have our cable television, if we can't get the latest, you know, game, if we're sleeping outside of the Apple store for the latest iPhone. We're sleeping outside of the Best Buy for what? For entertainment.

But what does the entertainment do? I mean, it keeps us busy and everybody loves entertainment, et cetera, et cetera, but really, it stops us from talking to each other. Do you remember — at least me, when I was a kid, we didn't watch football. We had food. Grandma, whoa, we had food. If she would have been Italian, I'd be a dead man. Have lots of food, entertainment, but we didn't have a lot of stuff.

But what we did have was we talked. I remember the holidays lasting well in to the night all around the kitchen table. We were always sitting, and they were the same stories every year — every single year, the same stories. But we learned about our past. That's important.

Did you do that this Thanksgiving? The weekend is not up yet. Do it. Your children must know their past.

I want to show you this coat, because I learned so much about myself in the last week or so with this coat. And it actually also restored hope in people. This coat, you see here, it says here, "For the wardrobe of Bill Beck by the Varsity Shop, Mount Vernon, Washington."

My father had one suit. One. And he apparently got it at the Varsity Shop. This is my father and this is my sister. I'm not in this picture. But this is my father. And this is our bakery when I was growing up.

And I grew up in a little teeny town called Mount Vernon, Washington. In the 1970s, early 1970s, the town was dying. And my folks saw it coming. The mall moved in to town and my folks saw it coming. They knew, as stores were closing, they knew we had to change.

So, here it is 1972-1973, somewhere in that area, and the bicentennial is coming. We lived in Mount Vernon, named after Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington in Washington state named after George Washington. And there's nothing like this on the West Coast.

And so, they said, you know what, maybe we should make a little colonial town. It'd be kind cool for the bicentennial, and we can make it into a little town. It's a destination. We're going to have to change. It's not going to be — we're not going to have JC Penney, we're not going to have Sears and everything else, but it's going to change but we could bring in specialty shops and we can have gas lamps and everything else.

And so, what they did is we started this little militia. Yes, I've said it, America. Glenn Beck is in a militia.

(LAUGHTER)

BECK: I think there were three at the beginning. And this is my father. This is that coat. I haven't seen this coat probably since 1977. Maybe.

I don't know where it has been. I'll tell you how I found it here in a second. But what I learned from this coat, as it was delivered to my office here in New York just last week was that it's not by happenstance that I'm here.

My folks loved my little hometown. I still do. It's a great, great town. It has weathered — they're still, they are still bricking the streets. And they're now making it in to the town, my folks said, to make it into. Because see, my folks — they didn't win.

And it became very awkward for my family. I mean, you're dressing like this in the Pacific Northwest, they're not real popular. And they could only get a few people to catch the vision of it. Too many people in town at the time were in denial. They said, "Oh, no, the malls are a passing fad." Really? Are they now? And so, they couldn't save the town.

And my folks ended up getting a divorce. And my — our bakery was sold. And — a bakery that had been there since the late 1800s closed. And they never stopped fighting.

And this coat made me realize that I'm my dad. I'm just doing it on a national scale. Not the local scale like my dad and mom did. My mother made this coat by hand. I remember she made the patterns herself. She cut out the patterns and she made the patterns, herself.

So, the second thing I learned from this coat. People are good. People are good. Let me tell you how it found its way to me.

It's the story of a young woman. She was struggling to make ends meet, provide for her family. She had just really gone through a rough divorce. And she was about to lose her house.

Let me show you her story and how it affected me and my family personally. Watch this:

BECK (voice-over): Like a lot of people across America, this past year, Amanda Zych struggled to stay in her home.

AMANDA ZYCH, FOUND GLENN'S DAD'S COAT AT THRIFT STORE: I have a big mortgage for my house. The house is very much still under water. It's just me, a single mom.

BECK: Making it more the difficult, the 30-year-old from Mountlake Terrace, Washington, is newly divorced and a single mom to a 3-year-old girl named Ella.

ZYCH: It's scary being a single mom and having a big mortgage to pay for.

BECK: Yet, she refused to ask for help from friends and family.

ZYCH: My parents are there ready to help when I need it, but I want to do it on my own.

BECK: Instead, she tapped in her own entrepreneurial spirit, opening up her own online vintage clothing shop.

ZYCH: I look at it as a kind of great form of recycling. I find treasures and able to pass them on to people that really love them. And it just really fulfills me, really my passion in life.

BECK: She often searches the racks of her local Goodwill for unique vintage pieces to sell at her online store.

ZYCH: January 2010 is the first month I actually made any money. Not much. And each month, I've made more. So, I don't know how much I can actually make, but last month, I made over $3,000 profit.

BECK: The site is helping her bring in a little extra cash she needs. But it also helps her do something so much more.

ZYCH: If I found somebody else's personal property at the Goodwill, I would want to return it to them right away. It was someone's personal item that needed to go back to its owner. That's how I looked at it. It's not something to make money off of.

BECK: Recently, she came across something, a custom-made revolutionary war coat. The name tag said read "Bill Beck."

ZYCH: It said on the tag, for the wardrobe of Bill Beck, Mount Vernon, Washington. And I thought who is this Bill Beck fellow that gets coats exclusively made for him. So, I Googled it and Glenn Beck's name pops right up. I called my mom immediately and I said, I think I have Glenn Beck's dad's coat.

BECK: My mom handmade the coat for my dad, sewing a custom made label in the lining and hearts in the swing coattails. I haven't seen this coat since about 1976 or '77.

ZYCH: I saw the hearts embroidered on the inside of the jacket and I thought that it must have been made with love to put the heart on the inside. It was a real special thing.

BECK: My dad and my family dressed up in revolutionary gear. It was to celebrate the bicentennial, but it was also a way to draw attention to the town. It caused a rift in the community and my family took a lot of heat. But my mom and dad stood their ground.

And those ideas have stood the test of time. Apparently, so has the coat.

Amanda says she probably would have gotten $300-$400 for the coat in the online shop, but instead, she chose to send it to me. And I am grateful to her for that. For me, the coat has invaluable memories sewn into it.

ZYCH: I think it's a great story to tell my daughter one day, about how I found this coat, it belonged to somebody famous and returned it to him and added a good deed. And it's a good lesson to share with her.

BECK: When I called Amanda after I received the coat, she wanted no fame or fortune for her kindness. I could tell that she knows she's leading by example. Just as I once looked up to and admired my dad in his custom coat, Ella is looking up to and watching her mom's actions today.

ZYCH: I hope she learns to be selfless and to do things for others without the thought of what happens in return.

BECK: I was on my way home from a doctor's appointment, when I finally got when I finally got Amanda's phone number. I had just received the coat that morning in my office. I have called her up and I had a great conversation with her. It didn't last long. And I hung up.

And I looked at my assistant who was there. And I said, she never ever mentioned the name of her business. She never asked me for a dime. She was just happy I got the coat.

I said, can you ask her if we can put her and her daughter on a plane and bring her to New York. I want you to meet Amanda. Next.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

(APPLAUSE)

BECK: That is my father's jacket that came, that my mother made for my father when they were trying to save our little hometown of Mount Vernon, Washington, which, by the way, it's a great town. Go visit and see some of the specialty shops and go see a movie in the Lincoln Theater. It's where I saw "Star Wars." It's unbelievable.

That jacket, I haven't seen forever. And Amanda Zych, she found the jacket at a Goodwill store outside of Seattle. And then — hi, by the way. How are you?

ZYCH: Good.

BECK: You are my hero. How did you find the jacket? You went to Goodwill and —

ZYCH: I go to a lot of thrift stores looking for stuff to sell to make money for my — to save my house.

BECK: Somebody actually would have bought that?

ZYCH: I don't know. I don't know.

BECK: I mean, that's crazy.

ZYCH: Yes.

BECK: When you wrote — you called your mom and said, I think I have Glenn Beck's dad jacket, right?

ZYCH: Yes.

BECK: And your mom, did she think you did or not?

ZYCH: She said well, you should probably contact, but she kind of didn't believe me, I don't think.

BECK: Yes.

And we get just my radio show address gets 5,000 e-mails every single day. And we read them all.

And this one actually came to me. It was forwarded up to me. And a guy walks in to my office that morning and he said, "Is this your father's jacket?" Just out of the blue. And I went oh, my gosh! Let me see that. Yes, I think it is!

And what I said to him, he told me the story that you had found it and you just wanted to know if it was — you were running a vintage clothing store. And I said, oh, boy, this is going to hurt. Ask her how much.

And I just figured somebody is just going to take and just, especially in Seattle, the odds are very high that you would hate me.

(LAUGHTER)

BECK: And just bleed me dry. And then two days later, the coat shows up. And I said, what did we pay for it? What did she charge? They said nothing. Why?

ZYCH: Well, it belonged to you. Well, I thought it did. So, I thought it should go back to its owner.

BECK: And you started this because you just went through a really hard divorce.

ZYCH: Yes.

BECK: And the banker told you basically about 80 percent of the people that are in your situation will lose their house.

ZYCH: Yes.

BECK: And you decided not to be a victim.

ZYCH: Trying, very hard.

BECK: Right. How is business? Hang on a second. Where is it? Let me —

ZYCH: Oh, my goodness.

BECK: How's business?

(LAUGHTER)

ZYCH: Good.

BECK: Is it? What could you find here?

(LAUGHTER)

ZYCH: Oh, I have about 1,000 things for sale right now.

BECK: A thousand things that are like really, really great bargains! And well-cared for and wonderful stuff.

ZYCH: Oh, my goodness.

BECK: Please go here. Please. Please. What are you watching the show for? Go here.

(LAUGHTER)

BECK: Here is a woman — do you hate her child? Is that what it is? You want her baby girl — you should see Ella. She is so cute. Do you want her not to have food? Is that what it is?

She can eat if you go here. And buy stuff. I know this whole show is about don't buy stuff, but —

(LAUGHTER)

BECK: This isn't working out well for me. OK. OK. Don't buy other stuff. Just buy this stuff.

ZYCH: There we go.

BECK: So you now have this business online. And it is — you still have another job. This is your second job.

ZYCH: Second job.

BECK: And you work for —

ZYCH: The local health department.

BECK: Which is a lot of fun.

ZYCH: Yes.

BECK: Yes.

ZYCH: Yes.

BECK: It could be worse. You could work for the TSA.

ZYCH: Yes.

BECK: Yes.

(LAUGHTER)

BECK: Which is strangely becoming almost the same thing.

So, what do you do from here? Where do you — what — is this — is this shop something that you think, I'm really — this is me, or is this a steppingstone?

ZYCH: I love my shop. I love vintage clothing. It's my passion. I'm excited to have found it.

It's a great — I'm happy right now. Really happy. Divorce is over.

BECK: Did you think that that was possible a couple of years ago?

ZYCH: No. About a year ago, no.

BECK: Yes.

America — first of all, I'm grateful for you. I am grateful for that jacket. I can't tell you what it means to me. And I'm grateful for your example that people who just want to do the right thing still do it. There are still decent people.

And I'm grateful for your example of someone who wasn't going to live off the backs of somebody else. You reached inside yourself and you did it. You're a hero. I don't know if you know that. You're a hero.

And hopefully, you'll be able to burn this show to a DVD and when your daughter is old enough, you can play it. And, Ella, be like your mom. She's a hero.

Desperate Libs Ratchet Up Extremist Label

With the advent of the tea party movement and President Obama's recent "shellacking," the left's long-established effort to marginalize mainstream conservative Americans as fringe extremists has reached a new stage of desperation.

For at least the past half-century, the dominant media culture has portrayed minority liberalism as mainstream and conservatives as shrill malcontents. From the time I started paying attention to politics as a young kid, liberals have been demonizing conservatives as reactionary throwback Neanderthal knuckle-dragging, warmongering extremists.

I'll never forget the "Daisy" ad from the LBJ presidential campaign, which featured a little girl picking petals from a daisy in a field as an ominous countdown from "10" led into footage of a nuclear explosion. The voice of LBJ then interceded with "These are the stakes, to make a world in which all of God's children can live or to go into the dark. We must either love each other, or we must die."

The unmistakable message was that Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater could not be trusted with his finger on the nuclear button. The ad resonated because the liberal media had already laid the foundation that conservative ideas were not just antiquated and obsolete but also dangerous.

Liberals similarly depicted Ronald Reagan as a bellicose buffoon itching to light up Moscow with his "Star Wars" nuclear toys; never mind that "Star Wars" was the left's pejorative shorthand for Reagan's proposed Strategic Defense Initiative, which was, as its title indicated, a defense system.

They also characterized Reagan's domestic policies, particularly his tax cuts, as extreme. Never would it have occurred to them that top marginal income tax rates of 90 percent were extreme, but a mere 25 percent across-the-board cut -- allowing American workers to keep a bit more of what they earned -- was.

The left even branded the moderate George W. Bush as a conservative extremist because of his tax cuts and his fierce resolve and firm policies in the war on terror. He got no slack from libs for his no-federal-dollars-left-behind education program, the new prescription drug entitlement or his immigration policy, among others.

These same people, mind you, sold Barack Obama -- National Journal's most liberal senator of 2007, member of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright's church, colleague of William Ayers', committed Alinskyite, consummate street agitator -- as a refined, urbane, erudite Harvard Law School graduate who would usher in a new kind of post-racial, post-partisan politics and show us the virtues and possibilities of governing through compromise and consensus.

Even two years' worth of Obama's hyper-partisanship, race-baiting, thuggish Alinskyite tactics and policy extremism has not deterred liberals from denying his (and their) extremism. Nor did the electorate's stunning repudiation of his agenda shake his or their resolve or their commitment to persist in portraying conservatives as extremists.

To this day, the liberal media largely ignore Obama's proven policy extremism and his dogmatic tactics in promoting it, from his stimulus package to reversing welfare reform to cap and trade to amnesty to swallowing up private businesses to excessive abuse of executive orders and his appointment of radical unaccountable czars to his appeasement approach on foreign policy and the war on terror to forcing Obamacare with its mandates down our collective throat.

They barely acknowledge that Obama remains immovably dedicated to his agenda, preferring to quote him resurrecting his phony gestures of bipartisanship, as in, "I believe that if we stop talking at one another and start talking with one another, we can get a lot done." Does he mean like "I don't want the folks who created the mess (the ones he consigned to the back seat) to do a lot of talking"?

We read more about the alleged extremism of Sarah Palin and the tea partyers than we do about Obama and his soundly trounced agenda. Now here are the real extremists, they say. Obama's Homeland Security Department, you will recall, suggested they were domestic terrorists. Network television and cable liberals helped foster the notion that the protesters were wild-eyed bigots just one nurse shy of serial killer Richard Speck. Democratic operative Paul Begala recently said, "The party of Palin is so far to the right it makes Newt look like Che Guevara."

Yes, tea partyers are extremists because they refuse to compromise on our national solvency or to conspire with statists in converting America into a European-style socialist nation.

In the run-up to the 2012 elections, we're going to see a growing intensity in the liberals' frantic and fraudulent effort to depict tea partyers, Sarah Palin and other real conservatives as extremists.

As this scenario inevitably plays out, we must remember that adherence to a fixed set of tried-and-true principles, otherwise known as America's founding ideals, is hardly extremism. Besides, to quote the victim of the "Daisy" ad, "extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice."

Obama's 7 'Creator' Omissions (Part 1)

With Thanksgiving behind us and Christmas before us, we are reminded once again of the integrated ways in which our Creator has had a role in our culture from the beginning. But will it stay that way?

As far back as the Declaration of Independence, our Founders affirmed together, "We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness."

Almost 235 years later, however, some media caught how President Barack Obama twice omitted the words "by their Creator" when reciting the declaration in speeches over the past several weeks.

But I discovered actually seven presidential "Creator" omissions in just the past few months!

--On Oct. 21 at a rally for Sen. Patty Murray in Seattle:

"None of us would be here if it weren't for that extraordinary leap of faith that had been taken. Thirteen colonies deciding to start a revolution based on an idea that had never been tried before -- a government of and by and for the people, a government based on the simple proposition that all men are created equal, that we're endowed with certain inalienable rights."

--On Oct. 18 at a Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee dinner in Rockville, Md.:

"It has to do with this idea that was started by 13 colonies that decided to throw off the yoke of an empire and said, 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that each of us are endowed with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.'"

--On Oct. 17 at a reception for Gov. Ted Strickland in Chagrin Fall, Ohio:

"The idea of America has never been easy. The notion of 13 colonies coming together and overthrowing the greatest empire in the world and then drafting a document that says 'we find these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, endowed with certain inalienable rights' -- that's hard."

Thank God that President Obama got it right July 4 from the White House's Blue Room balcony: "And here in a still-young century, let us renew our commitment to stand with those around the world who, like us, still believe in that simple yet revolutionary notion that we are all endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights."

When Les Kinsolving, WorldNetDaily's correspondent at the White House, asked press secretary Robert Gibbs why Obama had omitted "by their Creator," Gibbs' only explanation was, "I haven't seen the comments, Lester, but I can assure you the president believes in the Declaration of Independence."

Is that a reasonable excuse and explanation to you? Is omitting "by their Creator" from direct quotes of the declaration in several speeches a permissible, benign act of the president of the United States?

To me, it is not only what a man includes but also what he omits that tells you everything about him. As Leo F. Buscaglia once said, "things omitted are often more deadly than errors committed."

Even more apropos words the president might heed came from 20th-century American novelist William Faulkner, who said, "Tomorrow night is nothing but one long sleepless wrestle with yesterday's omissions and regrets."

(Next week, I will not only discuss another significant Creator omission overlooked by mainstream media but also inform you about how you can join people like my wife, Gena, and me -- including Charlie Daniels, Stephen Baldwin and Tony Dorsett -- in ensuring that future presidents and generations are not avoidant or ashamed of the Creator, in whom our Founders trusted in the dawn of our republic.)

Can Republicans Talk?

The biggest battle in the lame duck session of Congress may well be over whether or not to extend the Bush administration's tax cuts, which are scheduled to expire in January. The fact that this decision has been left until late in the eleventh hour, even though the expiration date has been known for years, tells us a lot about the utter irresponsibility of Congress.

Neither businesses nor individuals nor the Internal Revenue Service will know what to do until this issue is resolved. In a stalled economy, we do not need this prolonged uncertainty that can paralyze both consumer spending and investment spending.

Republicans want the current tax rates to continue and Democrats want only the current tax rates for people earning less than "the rich"-- variously defined-- to continue, with everyone making more than some specified income to have their tax rates rise next year.

What makes predicting the outcome of this battle very iffy is that Republicans won a big majority in the House of Representatives in the recent election, but the tax cuts are scheduled to expire before the new members of Congress are sworn in-- and the Democrats have a big majority in both Houses of Congress in the lame duck session, where this issue will be decided.

Theoretically, the Democrats could win, hands down, since they have the votes. But Congressional Democrats are well aware of how they lost big in the recent election, and some Democrats don't want to gamble their own jobs in the next election by going the class warfare route.

Neither the Republicans nor the Democrats can afford to have all the tax rates go up in January because they couldn't get together and pass a bill to prevent that from happening. But the nature of that bill matters, not just for politicians but-- far more important-- for the economy.

Former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich, now a professor at Berkeley, has made the case for the liberal Democrats' position in an article in the November 28th issue of the San Francisco Chronicle titled "Extend benefits for jobless, not tax cuts for the rich."

Professor Reich points out that both Republicans and some conservative Democrats say that we cannot afford another extension of unemployment benefits because the deficit is already too large. Then he adds: "But wait. These are the same members of Congress who say we should extend the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy."

Reich advocates "extending unemployment benefits for struggling families without a breadwinner" because "These families need the money. The rich don't."

This is the Democrats' argument in a nutshell. It seems very persuasive on the surface, however shaky it is underneath. But cuts in tax rates do not mean cuts in tax revenues, as Reich assumes. How the tax-rate battle in Congress turns out may depend on how well the Republicans answer such arguments.

These are not new arguments on either side. They go back more than 80 years. Over that long span of time, there have been many sharp cuts in tax rates under Presidents Calvin Coolidge, John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. So we don't need to argue in a vacuum. There is a track record.

What does that record say? It says, loud and clear, that cuts in tax rates do not mean cuts in tax revenues. In all four of these administrations, of both parties, so-called "tax cuts for the rich" led to increased tax revenues-- with people earning high incomes paying not only a larger sum total of tax revenues, but even a higher proportion of all tax revenues.

Most important of all, these tax rate reductions spurred economic activity, which we definitely need today.

These are the facts. But facts do not "speak for themselves." In terms of facts, the Republicans have the stronger case. But that doesn't matter, unless they make the case, which they show little sign of doing.

Democrats already understand the need for articulation. Robert Reich is only one of many articulate Democratic spokesmen. But where are the articulate Republicans? Do they even understand how crucial articulation is? The outcome of this lame duck session of Congress may answer that question.

Here we go with the liberal rhetoric again. You've seen the Democrats whine that keeping the "Bush tax cuts" would stuff the pockets of the richest Americans, while doing nothing to help the middle class. But that simply isn't the truth.

Here's the truth:

Congress is not voting on tax cuts, but rather, whether or not they should allow tax increases to take effect January 1, 2011.

The Democrats have tried to convince the American people that the Republicans want to pass "tax cuts for the rich." But, in reality, conservatives want to provide a bit of economic certainty by maintaining the current tax rates for all. In fact, Speaker-elect John Boehner (R-Ohio) says that keeping these tax rates is the most sensible way to "reduce the uncertainty in America and help small businesses begin to create jobs again."

This may come as a shocker to liberals: He's exactly right.

If the Democrats block the attempts of Republicans to permanently extend the current tax rates, taxes will rise for the first time in 14 years! And this will certainly stall economic recovery, as the Heritage Foundation projects that letting these rates expire would cost an average of 799,000 jobs annually from 2013-2019. If the Democrats continually promise that their number one focus is job creation, why are they insisting upon blocking legislation that would do exactly that?

The Democrats in Congress resist the facts and the truth. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada) wants to introduce two different pieces of legislation – one that would include maintaining the current tax rates for the middle class and another for the highest-income filers, many of whom include small business owners. He and his liberal colleagues are insistent upon making this class warfare legislation instead of economic growth legislation.

Most people can see through this. We see that letting the current tax rates expire would simply cause taxes to skyrocket for everybody, especially the small businesses responsible for most of the new jobs created. And that's no stimulus!

The rhetoric of liberals isn't working. They figure that if they keep saying it, enough of it will stick with enough people who will believe it. But guess what! Most of us aren't that stupid!
Just like we understood that when President Obama and liberals in Congress said health care "reform," they really meant a takeover of the American health care system. And we also knew that "cap and trade" were code words for "energy taxes." And we also realized that bailouts and the stimulus agendas were simply an unacceptable expansion of government. The Democrats must face the facts: We will not be fooled!

We understand that raising taxes in a deep recession would only further complicate our economic woes and worsen conditions for the American families struggling to make ends meet. We recognize that policy, not politics, will help steer this country on the right path.

We know that ignoring the facts doesn't make the facts go away. Most Americans realize that the surest form of economic stimulus is for the federal government to get out of the way. Raising taxes gets in everybody's way, especially businesses. Tax facts don't lie. And most Americans know the truth.
