For Leftists, It's Open Season on Christians David Limbaugh | Jun 16, 2015

David Limbaugh
If you doubt that Christians are fair game for ridicule by the cultural left, take a look at the hit piece on Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia by Jeffrey Tayler for Salon.

I can't decide which is worse, the title or the subtitle. The title: "Antonin Scalia is unfit to serve: A justice who rejects science and the law for religion is of unsound mind." The subtitle: "The justice claims to be an originalist, but his real loyalty is to religion and a phony man in the sky."

The writer is trying to be cute, but don't conclude that any part of his thesis is intended to be tongue-in-cheek. He opens by telling us that "faith-derangement syndrome" has now infected the Supreme Court as it has the executive branch.

He writes: "Sufferers of faith-derangement syndrome (FDS) exhibit the following symptoms: unshakable belief in the veracity of manifest absurdities detailed in ancient texts regarding the origins of the cosmos and life on earth; a determination to disseminate said absurdities in educational institutions and via the media; a propensity to enjoin and even enforce (at times using violence) obedience to regulations stipulated in ancient texts, regardless of their suitability for contemporary circumstances; the conviction that an invisible, omnipresent, omniscient authority (commonly referred to as 'God') directs the course of human and natural events, is vulnerable to propitiation and blandishments, and monitors individual human behavior, including thought processes, with an especially prurient interest in sexual activity."

Tayler is particularly exercised by his assumption that Scalia rejects Tayler's sainted opinions on both "anthropogenic global warming" and "the fact of evolution -- the foundation of modern biology -- in favor of the opening chapter of a compendium of cockamamie fables concocted by obscure humans in a particularly dark age, evidence that his faculty of reason has suffered the debilitating impairment associated with acute FDS." Tayler continues, "He therefore cannot be relied upon to adjudicate without prejudice and should be removed from the bench henceforth."

Sorry for the extensive quotes, but I have to assume you'd think I were exaggerating if I paraphrased this harangue.

What apparently got Tayler's attention was an interview of Scalia a few years ago by Jennifer Senior, a contributing editor for New York magazine. Tayler was disgusted that Scalia accepts the Catholic teaching about homosexuality and incredulous at his admission that he believes in heaven and hell and that the devil is "a real person."

Senior asked Scalia, "Have you seen evidence of the devil lately?" I wish Scalia had cited the left's glorification of abortion as Exhibit A, but he chose instead to point to the devil's wiliness in getting people not to believe in him or God.

Scalia's confessions of faith, by Tayler's lights, constitute an "outrage against reason," calling the devil "a comic-book bugaboo the pedophile pulpiteers of (Christianity) have developed to warp the minds of their credulous 'flocks' for two millennia." He condemns Scalia as a self-confessed "biblical literalist," which means Scalia is "an enemy of historical fact."

I wrote a book last year presenting evidence and arguments supporting Christianity's truth claims, so I won't re-litigate that case here except to say that in my humble view, many who espouse Darwinian evolution as if it were gospel despite the gaping holes in the theory or man-made global warming as an unchallengeable fact that represents an existential threat to humankind often are arrogant, curiously incurious and close-minded and don't know a fraction of what they think they know.

Further, the aggressive anti-theists who mock Christians for believing in the God of the Bible and his Word believe at least one thing that requires far more faith: that something arose from nothing without a Creator. Oh, sure, some of them tell you they don't believe that, saying that they believe in multiverses, that we are the spawn of aliens or that the universe has always existed, even though science, which they tend to deify when it is convenient, points to a definite beginning to the universe. Even if it didn't and even if there were no such thing as entropy, it would still take a formidable suspension of disbelief to believe in an eternal universe.

I am not nearly so troubled by Tayler's beliefs or non-beliefs as I am by his derisive, contemptuous and tyrannical attitude toward believers. You should know that he acknowledges that 6 in 10 Americans believe in the devil yet still implies the belief is insane. Christians, in his view, are "devotees of an invisible celestial tyrant."

What I suspect animates Tayler's angst regarding Scalia (and other Christians) is Scalia's faith-based view against same-sex marriage. Why else would Tayler single out a justice of the Supreme Court poised to rule on a case involving this issue? Why else would he sneer at God's "especially prurient interest in sexual activity," which, by the way, is a perverse mischaracterization of the God of the Bible? Why else would he allude to "the many Religious Freedom Restoration Acts disgracing legal codes of far too many states"?

In the end, however, Tayler's motives are beside the point, which is that he feels not only free to unleash this kind of slander against the belief system of the majority of Americans but also that there is no risk that he will be considered, much less called, a bigot or intolerant for doing so. That's because in the leftist-dominated media culture, you can, with limitless vile, insult individuals and groups outside those protected by political correctness with impunity and often with confidence that you'll be praised.

Death Penalty is Big Government at Its Worst Ron Paul | Jun 15, 2015

Ron Paul

Nebraska's legislature recently made headlines when it ended the state's death penalty. Many found it odd that a conservatives-dominated legislature would support ending capital punishment, since conservative politicians have traditionally supported the death penalty. However, an increasing number of conservatives are realizing that the death penalty is inconsistent with both fiscal and social conservatism. These conservatives are joining with libertarians and liberals in a growing anti-death penalty coalition.

It is hard to find a more wasteful and inefficient government program than the death penalty. New Hampshire recently spent over $4 million dollars prosecuting just two death penalty cases, while Jasper County in Texas raised property taxes by seven percent in order to pay for one death penalty case! A Duke University study found that replacing North Carolina's death penalty would save taxpayers approximately $22 million dollars in just two years.

Death penalty cases are expensive because sentencing someone to death requires two trials. The first trial determines the accused person's guilt, while the second trial determines if the convicted individual "deserves" the death penalty. A death sentence is typically followed by years of appeals, and sometimes the entire case is retried.

Despite all the time and money spent to ensure that no one is wrongly executed, the system is hardly foolproof. Since 1973, one out of every ten individuals sentenced to death has been released from death row because of evidence discovered after conviction.

The increased use of DNA evidence has made it easier to clear the innocent and identify the guilty. However, DNA evidence is not a 100 percent guarantee of an accurate verdict. DNA evidence is often mishandled or even falsified. Furthermore, DNA evidence is available in only five to 10 percent of criminal cases.

It is not surprising that the government wastes so much time and money on such a flawed system. After all, corruption, waste, and incompetence are common features of government programs ranging from Obamacare to the TSA to public schools to the post office. Given the long history of government failures, why should anyone, especially conservatives who claim to be the biggest skeptics of government, think it is a good idea to entrust government with the power over life and death?

Death penalty supporters try to claim the moral high ground by claiming that the death penalty deters crime. But, if the death penalty is an effective deterrent, why do jurisdictions without the death penalty have a lower crime rate than jurisdictions with the death penalty? And why did a 2009 survey find that the majority of American police chiefs consider the death penalty the least effective way to reduce violent crime?

As strong as the practical arguments against the death penalty are, the moral case is much stronger. Since it is impossible to develop an error-free death penalty system, those who support the death penalty are embracing the idea that the government should be able to execute innocent people for the "greater good." The idea that the government should be able to force individuals to sacrifice their right to life for imaginary gains in personal safety is even more dangerous to liberty than the idea that the government should be able to force individuals to sacrifice their property rights for imaginary gains in economic security.

Opposition to allowing the government to take life is also part of a consistent pro-life position. Thus, those of any ideology who oppose abortion or preemptive war should also oppose the death penalty. Until the death penalty is abolished, we will have neither a free nor a moral society.

Micro-totalitarianism Thomas Sowell | Jun 16, 2015

Thomas Sowell
The political left has come up with a new buzzword: "micro-aggression."

Professors at the University of California at Berkeley have been officially warned against saying such things as "America is the land of opportunity." Why? Because this is considered to be an act of "micro-aggression" against minorities and women. Supposedly it shows that you don't take their grievances seriously and are therefore guilty of being aggressive toward them, even if only on a micro scale.

You might think that this is just another crazy idea from Berkeley. But the same concept appears in a report from the flagship campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana. If you just sit in a room where all the people are white, you are considered to be guilty of "micro-aggression" against people who are not white, who will supposedly feel uncomfortable when they enter such a room.

At UCLA, a professor who changed the capitalization of the word "indigenous" to lower case in a student's dissertation was accused of "micro-aggression," apparently because he preferred to follow the University of Chicago Manual of Style, rather than the student's attempt to enhance the importance of being indigenous.

When a group of UCLA law students came to class wearing T-shirts with a picture of one of their professors who had organized an intramural softball game, those T-shirts were protested as a manifestation of "white privilege."

Why? Because that professor had written a book critical of affirmative action.

"Micro-aggression" protests have spread to campuses from coast to coast -- that is, from California's Berkeley and UCLA to Harvard and Fordham on the east coast, and including Oberlin and Illinois in the midwest.

Academic administrators have all too often taken the well-worn path of least resistance, by regarding the most trivial, or even silly, claims of victimhood with great seriousness, even when that involved undermining faculty members held in high esteem by most of their students and by their professional colleagues on campus and beyond.

The concept of "micro-aggression" is just one of many tactics used to stifle differences of opinion by declaring some opinions to be "hate speech," instead of debating those differences in a marketplace of ideas. To accuse people of aggression for not marching in lockstep with political correctness is to set the stage for justifying real aggression against them.

This tactic reaches far beyond academia and far beyond the United States. France's Jean-Paul Sartre has been credited -- if that is the word -- with calling social conditions he didn't like "violence," as a prelude to justifying real violence as a response to those conditions. Sartre's American imitators have used the same verbal tactic to justify ghetto riots.

Word games are just one of the ways of silencing politically incorrect ideas, instead of debating them. Demands that various conservative organizations be forced to reveal the names of their donors are another way of silencing ideas by intimidating people who facilitate the spread of those ideas. Whatever the rationale for wanting those names, the implicit threat is retaliation.

This same tactic was used, decades ago, by Southern segregationists who tried to force black civil rights organizations to reveal the names of their donors, in a situation where retaliation might have included violence as well as economic losses.

In a sense, the political left's attempts to silence ideas they cannot, or will not, debate are a confession of intellectual bankruptcy. But this is just one of the left's ever-increasing restrictions on other people's freedom to live their lives as they see fit, rather than as their betters tell them.

Current attempts by the Obama administration to force low-income housing to be built in middle class and upscale communities are on a par with forcing people to buy the kind of health insurance the government wants them to buy -- ObamaCare -- rather than leaving them free to buy whatever suits their own situation and preferences.

The left is not necessarily aiming at totalitarianism. But their know-it-all mindset leads repeatedly and pervasively in that direction, even if by small steps, each of which might be called "micro-totalitarianism."

Clueless Planless Michael Reagan | Jun 11, 2015

Michael Reagan

We've known for a long time that Barrack Obama is clueless when it comes to dealing with what's left of Iraq.

Now we also know he's still planless.

Our president was in Europe earlier this week at a "Group of Seven" conference, where he met with leaders of the world's seven most industrialized economies.

During his concluding remarks he made news when he said his top security advisers were still working on a plan for how to train Iraq defense forces to fight ISIS.

"We don't yet have a complete strategy because it requires commitments on the part of the Iraqis," the president said.

He said the current problem had something to do with the central government of Iraq having trouble recruiting soldiers.

That confession reminded Republicans like House Speaker John Boehner what the president said 10 bloody months ago - that he was still trying to figure out how to fight ISIS. "We don't have a strategy yet," Obama said.

When it comes to foreign policy, the president and his hapless crew of advisers have had a chronic "strategerie" problem since 2008.

But the deep-down problem Obama has is that he simply doesn't know how to be the leader of the United States.

He still thinks it's all about announcing plans and asking the United Nations for permission to act like an American president.

Do you remember Ronald Reagan announcing plans for our warplanes to bomb Kaddafi's house in Tripoli?

Or announcing we were going to go into Grenada? Or asking the United Nations if it was OK for the United States to do it?

You don't remember, because my father knew what we needed to do regarding Kaddafi and Grenada and he did it. He made his decision and then acted.

Checking with the U.N. - or even Congress - to see if it was OK with them was the last thing on his mind.

It's called leadership. It's called being the president of the United States and knowing when to act like one.

No American president should ever wait for the U.N. to give him its OK on anything.

(And don't worry about those threats that if we give the U.N. the disrespect it deserves it will move its headquarters out of New York City.

(It'll never happen, which is too bad, because the U.N.'s corrupt bureaucrats are too attached to New York. It's where all their hookers live.)

So come on, Mr. President. You were elected president. Wake up and smell the White House coffee.

You have a lot of leading to do, if it's not too late.

Because you and Hillary have been so bad at your jobs, the Middle East has gone back in time a thousand years and collapsed into chaos and war.

Iraq has been broken into pieces. Syria and Libya too. Afghanistan will probably be next, as soon you have us leave.

The rise of ISIS is already a major disaster and will only get worse. A report recently said it has recruited 25,000 followers from 100 countries.

The last thing you should do, Mr. President, is hold a press conference and tell us you still don't have a plan to fight ISIS.

When you tell us that, you're basically admitting to the whole world that you are incompetent.

The world, sadly, already knows that. So do half of the American people. But why have a press conference and put it on the record?

Existential Threats to America David Limbaugh | Jun 12, 2015

David Limbaugh
It's to be expected that I hardly agree with President Obama on any political issues, as we have radically different worldviews, but what I don't understand is why there isn't more alarm from all quarters about the potentially existential threats to this nation posed by his policies.

Obama's ideas, policies and actions in office are often so outrageous that when you describe them or the threat they represent, people discount your comments as extreme on their face. The trouble is it's hard not to sound extreme when what he's doing is extreme.

I probably disagreed with Bill Clinton 80 percent of the time, but I never feared that the country was in serious jeopardy under him. As bad as I believed Obama would be in 2008, I never thought those in the political establishment (sympathetic Democratic politicians in Washington and too many ineffective or gun-shy Republican ones) would either join him or abdicate their responsibility and let him accelerate the demise of the nation as rapidly as he has. It would be impossible for one man to do this much damage alone.

Matt Drudge recently tweeted: "Next 18 months going to be EVERYTHING. Bigger than campaign news: Obama's scorched Earth exit. You've been warned..." This makes me nervous. How could he get any worse?

Obama has already made serious headway in "fundamentally transforming" this nation for the worse. He so obviously rejects the American idea that I don't believe I should waste words proving it here. He is bitter about our founding and bitter about our current state -- even though he's been radically changing it for six years. There's no satisfying a revenge appetite.

I am quite serious: On any one of a number of fronts, this country, without a dramatic course change, could be in dire trouble.

Let's look at the war on terror. Obama has been in such denial about radical Islam that he refuses to recognize even undeniable acts of terrorism for what they are -- here and around the world. He holds to the painfully warped idea that Islamist terrorism and the violence that intrinsically springs from it are rooted in poverty, empirical evidence to the contrary be damned. If you don't recognize and identify your enemy or if you unilaterally declare a truce, you can't effectively fight it. But declaring a war over when your sworn enemies have told you they are committed to your utter destruction and are becoming even more aggressive is objectively insane -- and suicidal.

Then there are Obama's negotiations with Iran. Even many Democrats admit that his actions make no sense and are dangerous. You can't possibly trust this radical, Islamo-fascist regime to honor its agreements when it has already broken promises it made to us on the very issue we're discussing -- not to mention that this regime also is committed to our destruction and the destruction of Israel.

Our fiscal condition? Actuaries and other experts uniformly predict that entitlements will swallow our entire budget -- 100 percent of our federal revenues -- within a generation or so, and when it comes to budget projections, the gloom-and-doom predictions are always understated. Democratic politicians will not even acknowledge we have a problem with our discretionary budget, so the entitlement budget is beyond off-limits to them. All the noisemakers are talking about the mythical threats of global warming and completely ignoring -- suppressing, actually -- the incontrovertible fact that we are fiscally done if we don't get our entitlements under control, yesterday. But Obama is determined not to let anyone touch them and has even added another egregious offender -- Obamacare -- and don't even get me started on the fiscal and health care dangers it poses.

Next, our deliberately porous borders. I don't care if the perennially unexcitable tell you that our rate of immigration has slowed or if certain monomaniacal libertarian-oriented people tell you we need more people for more jobs. Far too many people (just one is too many) who hate America and want to destroy it are streaming over the border. Forget assimilation or acculturation. To leftists, you're a hero if you agree with them that America stinks. The more the better -- because they'll vote Democratic.

On to racial, gender and class tensions. This administration is deliberately fanning the flames of division in this nation, and this distrust is tearing away at the fabric of our society. But if you support proven conservative policies, you're a racist, sexist, bigoted homophobe. If you call for tax fairness, you hate the poor. If you promote the free market as the best method to produce the most prosperity across the board, you are unspeakably reactionary, evil and bereft of compassion.

Our Constitution? Obama is making a mockery of its limitations on his power, the most recent example of which is the Obamacare subsidies. So little has been done to check Obama's power that some political analysts reasonably believe that future presidents -- Hillary Clinton has been named, God forbid she wins -- will trample even more heavily on the Constitution.

I talk to far too many people to believe I'm alone in my concerns. But the wrecking ball that is Barack Obama and his army of enablers in his party and the media proceed unabated in their destructive march.

God help us, and God save the republic.

Relax, Your Technology Dependency Is Healthy S. E. Cupp | Jun 11, 2015

S. E. Cupp

What's your sister-in-law's phone number?

When is your nephew's birthday?

Is there a physical map -- of anywhere -- in your car?

If you're like most of us, you've long surrendered your ability to retain this kind of information to handy gadgets that do it for you. This has some scientists and culture watchers very, very concerned.

You can't go a day without someone complaining that technology is making us dumber, and it's tempting to agree. We are creatures of the hyperlink, where the only real knowledge we need is the knowledge of where to find knowledge.

Google has the answers. Amazon has the products. Your smart phone knows when your nephew's birthday is, and will even send you a helpful reminder! Mine just alerted me to a meeting I definitely forgot about.

If we're honest, though, no one really misses having to memorize stuff, or the anxiety of getting lost, or poring through a card catalog at the local library. Yet we still seem to believe all these technological innovations that make our lives more convenient are sinister. And, of course, there are apps for that.

You can install Freedom or Moment on your devices to prevent you from engaging with them, yet technology writer Nicholas Carr lamented that very necessity in an interview with Vice, saying, "Our own willpower is somehow insufficient to deal with this." True, and we also can't stop ourselves from eating all the Pringles. We are but mortal beings.

Study after study shows just how terrible our technology dependency is. The lights emitted by smartphones and computers make it harder for us to sleep at night. We are more easily distracted. Our memories have depleted. Scientists have even proven that our brains have stopped learning how to navigate, thanks to GPS systems.

Many also believe that new gadgets -- like the Amazon Dash button, which allows you to automatically reorder laundry detergent or diapers, for example -- are going to cause us to forget how to do everyday tasks. Paul Roberts, author of "The Impulse Society: America in the Age of Instant Gratification" frets that "losing the mental skills needed to compile a shopping list ... (is) part of the broader 'de-skilling' of everyday life with the spread of automated conveniences."

Then, of course, there's the negative impact on our human interactions. If you think sending an emoji of a birthday cake is a sufficient way to wish your mother a happy birthday, you've probably become a little disconnected.

But Carr says this happened long before the Internet. "If you look at the original radios, they were transmission as well as reception devices, but before long most people just stopped transmitting and started listening."

It seems to me, though, that a lot of this handwringing is just misplaced nostalgia for what we think of as simpler times.

Clive Thompson, author of "Smarter Than You Think," explains that every technological innovation from the past provoked the very same fears that we have today. The printing press; the automobile; the ATM -- all cause for great anxiety once. And yet we adapt, to quote the publicity blurb of his book, "learning to use the new and retaining what's good of the old."

It's inarguable that social media is increasing the scope of what we know, connecting us to faraway people and places and making it easier to interact with the global community. And search engines have only empowered our curiosity instead of stifling it. I don't know anything about the red-crested tree rat, but I'm far more likely to Google it than I am to reach for an encyclopedia that I don't own. (I just Googled it -- it's nocturnal and lives in the forests of Colombia.)

It's tempting to worry that the robots are taking over and civilization is doomed to idiocy. But fear not: Stupidity is timeless. As Thompson says, "There were plenty of people who were shallow and trivial and not interested in the long-form thought" before the Internet came along.

So relax. Enjoy your technological conveniences. And remind yourself that you never really learned how to program your VCR anyway.
