The Story of Halloween

The Story of Halloween

Halloween is one of the oldest holidays with origins going back thousands of years. The holiday we know as Halloween has had many influences from many cultures over the centuries, from the Roman's Pomona Day, to the Celtic festival of Samhain, to the Christian holidays of All Saints and All Souls Days.

Hundreds of years ago in what is now Great Britain and Northern France, lived the Celts. The Celts worshipped nature and had many gods, with the sun god as their favorite. It was "he" who commanded their work and their rest times, and who made the earth beautiful and the crops grow.

The Celts celebrated their New Year on November 1st. It was celebrated every year with a festival and marked the end of the "season of the sun" and the beginning of "the season of darkness and cold."

On October 31st after the crops were all harvested and stored for the long winter the cooking fires in the homes would be extinguished. The Druids, the Celtic priests, would meet in the hilltop in the dark oak forest (oak trees were considered sacred). The Druids would light new fires and offer sacrifices of crops and animals. As they danced around the fires, the season of the sun passed and the season of darkness would begin.
When the morning arrived the Druids would give an ember from their fires to each family who would then take them home to start new cooking fires. These fires would keep the homes warm and free from evil spirits.

The November 1st festival was called Samhain (pronounced "sow-en"). The festival would last for 3 days. Many people would parade in costumes made from the skins and heads of their animals. This festival would become the first Halloween.

During the first century the Romans invaded Britain. They brought with them many of their festivals and customs. One of these was the festival know as Pomona Day, named for their goddess of fruits and gardens. It was also celebrated around the 1st of November. After hundreds of years of Roman rule the customs of the Celtic's Samhain festival and the Roman Pomona Day mixed becoming 1 major fall holiday.

The next influence came with the spread of the new Christian religion throughout Europe and Britain. In the year 835 AD the Roman Catholic Church would make November 1st a church holiday to honor all the saints. This day was called All Saint's Day, or Hallowmas, or All Hallows. Years later the Church would make November 2nd a holy day. It was called All Souls Day and was to honor the dead. It was celebrated with big bonfires, parades, and people dressing up as saints, angels and devils.

But the spread of Christianity did not make people forget their early customs. On the eve of All Hallows, Oct. 31, people continued to celebrate the festivals of Samhain and Pomona Day. Over the years the customs from all these holidays mixed. October 31st became known as All Hallow Even, eventually All Hallow's Eve, Hallowe'en, and then - Halloween.

The Halloween we celebrate today includes all of these influences, Pomona Day's apples, nuts, and harvest, the Festival of Samhain's black cats, magic, evil spirits and death, and the ghosts, skeletons and skulls from All Saint's Day and All Soul's Day.

History Of Trick-Or-Treating

History Of Trick-Or-Treating

One of the main events of Halloween is trick-or-treating, also known as guising in Scotland, in which children dress up in costume disguises and go door-to-door in their neighborhood, ringing each doorbell and yelling "trick or treat!" The occupants of the house (who might themselves dress in a scary costume) will then hand out small candies, miniature chocolate bars or other treats. Homes sometimes use sound effects and fog machines to help set a spooky mood. Other house decoration themes (that are less scary) are used to entertain younger visitors. Children can often accumulate many treats on Halloween night, filling up entire pillow cases or shopping bags.

In Scotland, children or guisers are likely to recite "The sky is blue, the grass is green, may we have our Halloween" instead of "trick or treat!", they will then have to impress the members of the houses they visit with a song, trick, joke or dance in order to earn their treats.

Tricks play less of a role in modern Halloween, though the night before Halloween is often marked by pranks such as soaping windows, egging houses or stringing toilet paper through trees. Before indoor plumbing was so widespread, tipping over or displacing outhouses was a popular form of trick.

Typical Halloween costumes have traditionally been monsters such as vampires, ghosts, witches, and devils. The stereotypical Halloween costume is a sheet with eyeholes cut in it as a ghost costume. In 19th-century Scotland and Ireland the reason for wearing such fearsome (and non-fearsome) costumes was the belief that since the spirits that were abroad that night were essentially intent on doing harm, the best way to avoid this was to fool the spirits into believing that you were one of them. In recent years, it has become common for costumes to be based on themes other than traditional horror, such as dressing up as a character from a TV show or movie, or choosing a recognizable face from the public sphere, such as a politician (in 2004, for example, George W. Bush and John F. Kerry were both popular costumes in America). In 2001, after the September 11 attacks, for example, costumes of firefighters, police officers, and United States military personnel became popular among children. In 2004, an estimated 2.15 million children in the United States were expected to dress up as Spider Man, the year's most popular costume. [1]

"'Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF" has become a common sight during Halloween in America, Canada, and Mexico. Started by UNICEF in 1950, the program involves the distribution of small boxes by schools to trick-or-treaters, in which they can solicit small change donations from the houses they visit. It is estimated that children have collected more than $119 million for UNICEF since its inception.
A child usually "grows out of" trick-or-treating by his or her teenage years. Teenagers and adults instead often celebrate Halloween with costume parties or other social get-togethers.

The Pumpkin Patch

The Pumpkin Patch

The Celts that lived in what is now Great Britain and Northern France would carry a lantern when they walked on the eve of October 31. These lanterns were carved out of big turnips and the lights were believed to keep the evil spirits away. Children would carve faces in the turnips. These carved turnips were called "jack-o-lanterns.

Legends have it that the "jack-o-lantern" got its name from a stingy and mean old man, named Jack, who when he died was too mean to get into heaven. When Jack went to hell he was met by the Devil who gave him a piece of burning coal and sent him away. Jack placed the burning coal in a turnip to use as a lantern to light his way. The legends claim that Jack is still walking with the lantern looking for a place to stay.

When the early settlers came to America they found the big round orange pumpkin. Being larger and much more colorful than turnips, the pumpkin made great "jack-o-lanterns". Eventually the pumpkin would replace the turnip.

As the settlers spread across America they took their Halloween celebrations with them. The custom of the "jack-o-lantern" would travel with them. Eventually the Pumpkin would become the most widely recognized symbol of the Halloween holiday.

Witches and Warlocks have had a long history with Halloween. Legends tell of witches gathering twice a year when the seasons changed, on April 30 - the eve of May Day and the other was on the eve of October 31 - All Hallow's Eve.

The witches would gather on these nights, arriving on broomsticks, to celebrate a party hosted by the devil. Superstitions told of witches casting spells on unsuspecting people, transform themselves into different forms and causing other magical mischief.

It was said that to meet a witch you had to put your clothes on wrong side out and you had to walk backwards on Halloween night. Then at midnight you would see a witch.
When the early settlers came to America, they brought along their belief in witches. In American the legends of witches spread and mixed with the beliefs of others, the Native Americans - who also believed in witches, and then later with the black magic beliefs of the African slaves.

The black cat has long been associated with witches. Many superstitions have evolved about cats. It was believed that witches could change into cats. Some people also believed that cats were the spirits of the dead.

One of the best known superstitions is that of the black cat. If a black cat was to cross your path you would have to turn around and go back because many people believe if you continued bad luck would strike you.

*Holidays on the Net has received numerous objections about our presentation of Halloween folklore involving witches. In fairness we present this letter from one of our visitors wishing to address this stereotyping. "Letter to the Webmaster:"
Letter to the Webmaster

Please Note: We at Holidays on the Net work hard to present factual holiday information. We have received numerous objections about our presentation of Halloween folklore involving witches. In fairness we present this letter from one of our visitors wishing to address this stereotyping. This letter is unedited (aside from spelling corrections).
Holidays on the Net is great! There is only one really big problem that I see here.
You see there is this religion that IS recognized by the United States of America as an actual religion. We hold the SAME religious freedoms that you hold. It is called Wicca, for short we are witches.

Yes it's true that we do gather on Halloween and May first. Actually their names would be Samhain, pronounced Sow-wan, Oct. 31.Yule, Dec. 21, Imbolc, Feb 2nd, Ostara, March 20, Beltane, May 1st, Summer Solstice, June 21, Lammas, Aug 1, Mabon Sept 22, and then back to Samhain again.

We, however, do not worship the devil as your story put it. In fact we have no deity that we call the devil, Lucifer, Satan, or whatever. We believe is a balance of both male and female. Thus we worship the God and the Goddess. We honor Mother Earth, and hold all of nature with great respect.

Also we do not harm anyone. The Wiccan Reed states that, AN IT HARM NONE, DO WHAT YE WILL. This one line encompasses all of the Ten Commandments the Moses supposedly brought down off of Sanai. We do not seek to destroy nor harm others for their beliefs. And we always try to understand everyone for their own system of beliefs. We do not believe that Wicca is the only true religion, and that we are all heading in the same direction after life, but we all get there on different paths.

If you were to sit down and actually study the Christian holidays you would see that many of our traditions were taken by them. Many of the rites that Christians perform were here long before there was a Christian church, or Jewish for that matter. These are rites and ceremonies that were and still are practiced by Wiccans.

Just to name a few, Yule is on December 21. That is when we celebrate the birth of our Lord. Ostara is right before Easter. This holiday, or sabbat as we call them, is a fertility rite. Hence that is why there are bunnies and eggs. We believe that on Samhain the veil between the worlds is at its thinnest. So this is when we gather to honor our past on ancestors. To tell them that we love them, that we miss them, and ask for help if needed. It's our memorial day. Not a day that we gather to fly out on "brooms" and bring harm and evil upon the world. To be quite honest, the Samhain ritual is very emotional and touching. There are lots of tears and hugging.

We also do a little ritual at our sabbats called cakes and wine. This is when we break bread and offer it to the God and the Goddess. Then in turn we each partake of the bread. After this we do the wine. It is offered to the God and the Goddess, and then we each partake of this. It seems strange how a pagan ritual has been put into a Christian ritual, communion.
On Yule we celebrate the birth of the Lord. This falls on December 21st. We decorate our homes with Yule logs and holly. Funny how Christmas songs still sung by Christians today talk of "pagan" rites for the sabbat. The holly is placed to honor the Holly King. The Yule log is set with three candles. They honor the maiden, mother and crone. The three forms of the Goddess. The Christians use the three as well, as the father, son and Holy Ghost.
Also we DO NOT use the term "warlock". This word means oath breaker. A male witch is called a witch, not a warlock. Many witches will take offense to this. Myself being a "male witch", and High priest and ordained minister of the Wiccan faith, I am not very fond of people calling me a "warlock".

The myth that people formed about us flying on brooms is a very old crop fertility rite. The people would gather together at their fields with brooms and pitch forks. They would jump over the brooms and such as a gesture of showing how high the crops should grow that year. The higher they would jump, the higher they believed their crops would grow. We did not fly through the air on the full moon wreaking havoc.
This is just a very small portion of our belief system.

And as usual, people have misconstrued us out to be some evil beings trying to bring harm to the world. It's sad that people can't understand who we really are. Even the Hebrews worshipped the Goddess for a time.

If you don't think so look in Jeremiah chapter 7:8. Everything was fine until good old Jehovah got mad. In all actuality, he didn't get mad. It was more likely that the male governing body couldn't keep control if the woman were not brought down. Probably where they got the saying of let your women be silent in church.

Understand that I am not trying to bash you for your story. But it would be nice and VERY appreciated if after the stories you could put the actual truth. It may have been just a Halloween tale, but people read this stuff and believe it all to be true.

There may be no more witch burnings in America, but we still lose our jobs, homes, families, and children because of belief. Because we are not following the "one true god" as the Christians would put it. That is why there are organizations like the Witches League for Religious Discrimination. We are still here, and growing in numbers. Our belief will never die out, no more than the Christians. But we do hold the same religious freedoms that they hold.

When you do your holiday net stories and such perhaps you should add people of other faiths as well. Not just the Christians and Jews. Maybe then the world would be more at peace and people could understand one another better.
Thank you,
Rev. (Name Withheld)*

TheBlaze.com - Wild Pics Capture Grizzly Chasing Bison in Yellowstone Park

I thought you would like this story from TheBlaze.com

http://www.theblaze.com/stories/wild-pics-capture-grizzly-chasing-bison-in-yellowstone-park/

When the pictures first surfaced some in Montana doubted they could even be real.

But now the photographer has surfaced and he's talking to KTVQ-TV.  Alex Wypyszinski took the pictures last April after dropping his wife off for work:

http://www.ktvq.com/news/the-bison-got-away/

"I thought it was a horse and carriage," said Wypyszinski. "That was the kind of noise that I heard."

By the time he turned around, the two fuzzy brown images were racing quickly toward him.

Wypyszinski pulled out his camera quickly, thinking he was going to catch two moose racing down the highway.

He quickly learned he was mistaken.

"I thought I was having a hallucination or something," said Wypyszinski. "I couldn't believe what that buffalo looked like."

It was a bison, badly burned from an encounter with one of the numerous hot spots in Yellowstone National Park.

The sight of such an injured bison alone is rare, but what Wypyszinski saw next was once in a lifetime.

"Never, ever, ever," said Wypyszinski. "I've seen plenty of bear, and more buffalo. But I've never seen anything like that before."

Here's part of an audio interview with Wypyszinski:

See all 14 of the pictures here.

Bill O'Reilly Why Is NPR Getting Our Money?

Bill O'Reilly

Bill O'Reilly

Why Is NPR Getting Our Money?

One of the big reasons the Democrats may get hammered next Tuesday is that under that party's congressional leadership, the nation has run up an astounding $5 trillion in new debt over the past three years. And what do we have to show for all that deficit spending? Nancy Pelosi flying home to San Francisco in a private jet?

As part of the federal gravy train, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting is set to receive $420 million this year alone. No wonder Elmo is smiling. This is free money for a group of people who should be competing in the private marketplace.

And what are the taxpayers getting for their money? Well, this much is beyond dispute: The news-based programming on PBS and NPR is heavily tilted to the left. In fact, as far as their news analysts are concerned, there are 17 liberal-leaning individuals on the air and one moderate, David Brooks. There are no conservative voices heard in the national public broadcasting precincts.

The incredible firing last week of the 18th liberal analyst, Juan Williams, unmasked the NPR operation, which is deeply invested in liberal causes. A few days before Juan was sacked, far-left billionaire George Soros donated $1.8 million to NPR so they could hire some reporters. NPR snatched up the Soros money faster than a raccoon could down a cupcake. So I am asking myself: Did Soros get the Bill Haley and the Comets oldies package or the Disco Explosion CD set for his largesse?

The fact that the Corporation for Public Broadcasting denies it is an ideological operation is pretty stunning. There are plenty of conservatives who would like to bloviate on a weekly TV program like Bill Moyers did for 20 years. And old Bill was canny. Not only did he draw a salary from PBS, but his production company had the right to market videotapes of his programs. Wow. Nice perk from the taxpayers, right, Bill? But PBS simply can't find any right-wingers worthy of the Moyers treatment. I know they are looking very hard.

This dishonest shell game has got to stop. We live in a time where cable TV rules and satellite radio is all over the place. If PBS and NPR have good product, there are plenty of places for it in the private sector. Let these people compete for their dollars. I will miss seeing The Drifters performing on fundraisers every two months, but I'll bite the bullet. No more public funding, please.

A number of Republicans on Capitol Hill say they will introduce legislation to defund public broadcasting. That will probably pass. But President Obama will, I believe, veto the attempt. After all, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting is a liberal cathedral, and the president will not want to disturb the service.

Glenn Beck: Yes I Can

Friday, October 29, 2010

This is a rush transcript from "Glenn Beck," October 28, 2010. This copy may not be in its final form and may be updated.

GLENN BECK, HOST: Hello, America.

We are five days away — has anyone noticed he sounds like he is on a treadmill all the time every time he's giving a speech? Let me tell you something else about this country. I don't know if he's just gotten from a jog or what. But anyway — oops!

All right. Let me tell you, we are five days away from the election and there is nobody who's going to cover it like Fox News. You're going to get all the polls. You know, everybody telling you exactly what's going on, unlike any place else.

But tonight, I will focus on why we are voting the way we are voting, because Americans are not stupid. They get it. It just takes a while — we just have to get kicked in the head once a while, you know what I mean?

It's like with World War II, it's the same thing every time. Every time, it's the same thing. You know, everybody, there's a monster growing, Hitler is growing in Europe and we are like, OK, after years of it. OK, wait a minute, what's going on again? And we just put our pants on and we get the job done.

Well, that's what's happening now, America is waking up. You don't put America back to sleep. We are forced with a choice of two starkly different visions of America.

Now, I'm not talking about policy here, I'm talking about you. How do our leaders see you? What is your role in the future of this republic?

What do you want it to be? Do you want it to be that you want to be coddled? Because that's one option, it's simple. You need help. You can't do it by yourself. Mommy is going to come and push you on the swing at the playground, but not on a dangerous swing because you could get boo-boos. Gee, Beave. Really? Yes. You can't get moving by yourself either. Mommy will be there to push you.

Now, that might be helpful when you are four, but is that where America is now?

In some ways, this path is lined with good intentions. But once you get onto the path, it becomes more and more disturbing.

The entire premise of the leadership that is based in Washington now is based on the vision of you. You can't do it by yourself. You're so stupid. You're so stupid you can't make decisions that affect your life. You need them.

Did you hear Mrs. Obama? She was talking about she needs $400 million for food deserts so we can make the right choices and we have the right food available so when can all have carrots?

You know what, Mrs. Obama? Would you do me a favor? When you can get your husband to stop smoking in a federal building, then call me.

As our president said, it's his agenda that's on the ballot. So, it makes sense that the motivation behind that agenda is on the ballot, too.

Now, we all remember this super, super classic right out of the president's own mouth. Here it is:

(BEGIN AUDIO CLIP)

PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: They get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy towards people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment.

(END AUDIO CLIP)

BECK: Yes. You see, in tough times — and this is before the tough times really started to set in — but now, can you imagine? Oh, you can't help yourself? You've got to cling to your magic sky god and your hatred of immigrants. You're silly little Second Amendment.

Oh, you're just not intelligent enough to realize what you're doing. But that's OK, we are from the government and we are here to help.

The president is surrounded himself with people who view you in exactly the same way. Here's Cass Sunstein, our regulatory "czar":

(BEGIN AUDIO CLIP)

CASS SUNSTEIN, REGULATORY "CZAR": One we know people that are human and have some Homer Simpson in them, then there's a lot that can be done to manipulate them.

(END AUDIO CLIP)

BECK: D'oh! Shouldn't have said that one.

This is the progressive mindset: You are incapable of making the right decision. So, Cass Sunstein will nudge you or — I like his honesty there — manipulate you.

But when do they begin to shove you or worse?

The progressive names on the ballot all across America echo the same exact thinking. This is a candidate for governor of Colorado, John Hickenlooper. He was speaking talking about the Matthew Shepard case and the brutal murder. Listen to this:

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

JOHN HICKENLOOPER, COLORADO GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATE: A couple of things. I mean, you know, the tragic death of Matthew Shepard occurred in Wyoming, and Colorado and Wyoming are very similar. We have some of the same, you know, backwards-thinking in the kind of rural western areas you see in, you know, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BECK: I was just in Colorado a couple of days ago and I was up in North Dakota, too, a couple of days ago. I didn't notice that — that backward-thinking there in rural western areas of America. But I guess I am one of them.

See, thinking Americans, well, they just wouldn't support violence against those who are different than them, but those in backwards America.

This kind of thinking is a pandemic among progressives. Do you remember this super, super classic from the late John Murtha in 2008?

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

REP. JOHN MURTHA, D-PA.: This whole area, years ago, was really redneck.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BECK: OK. We had another guy who's running for, against Rand Paul in Kentucky saying the same thing. Well, hicks are in my territory, you know? Really? The hicks?

See, it's not just the politicians though. They're the ones usually afraid to go on record about this, but they're strangely not anymore. The media is more free to blur this nonsense out and they do it all the time. Watch this:

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIPS)

DYLAN RATIGAN, MSNBC HOST: The Tea Party has a bit of an integrity problem as everybody from birthers to open racists to outright Nazis are actually on the team.

KEITH OLBERMANN, MSNBC HOST: Be prepared for the poor, dumb, manipulated (EXPLETIVE DELETED) Tea Partiers to have a glorious few years as the front men as the corporation that bankroll them slowly unroll their total control of our political system.

(END VIDEO CLIPS)

(BEGIN AUDIO CLIP)

JANEANE GAROFALO, ACTRESS/ACTIVIST: The tea baggers, the alleged patriot movement, that — that is racism pure and simple.

(END AUDIO CLIP)

BECK: OK. There we go. Now, I'm going to play new audio, new video -
- this is from the "George Lopez" show and I want you not only to watch carefully what he says. He's not joking. Watch how the audience also cheers for him and also look for George Lopez's reaction. Here it is:

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BILL MAHER, COMEDIAN: That's the problem with the country. They say that there's not enough bipartisanship, there's too much. If there's two parties and they are both against legalizing weed, what did we have? I mean, what's the point of having Democrats? We have Democrats for one reason: To drag the ignorant hillbilly half of this country —

(CHEERS)

MAHER: — into the next century, which in their case is the 19th.

(CHEERS)

GEORGE LOPEZ, TV HOST: Yes, absolutely, I agree.

MAHER: I'll tell you this about Americans, about the American electorate, the voter. They love a winner. You know, as soon he passed health care, it went up 15 points. They don't understand the issues. They're too stupid. They're like a dog, they can understand inflection, they can understand fear, they can understand dominance. They don't understand issues. But when he won on that issue, he went up.

LOPEZ: Right.

MAHER: I'll tell you something — if Tiger Woods had come back and won the Masters, he could have murdered all those girls he was (EXPLETIVE DELETED).

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BECK: You catch all that? We just like a winner.

It sounds to me like he's describing the German people, that as long as you just present yourself as a "winner," we can have a dictator. And maybe we should have a dictator because we only need one party anyway — one that can just drag everyone to the right choice.

Just an ADD here, ADD moment here for Bill Maher, I mean, I just want to point out — health care supported, he said that the support went up 15 points after its passage. I think I have that right. But I'm just —

Here it is: 45 percent, 46 percent, 45 percent, 48 percent, 44 percent, 44 percent, 47 percent, then it passes — 45 percent, 44 percent. Yes, there's the —

That's the most-friendly polling in the health care bill from The Washington Post. his is before it passed. This is skyrocketing 15 points. Wow. Look at that. It's great, isn't it?

Look, America gets it. But back to the idea that you're just a bunch of stupid dogs — you have a choice: Choice one is you cannot do it. Choice two is you can.

A dog? Well, what do you do when you have a dog that's acting erratically. That's endangering the family. That's just too stupid and is causing problems? Well, first, you might give it away. But it's endangering everybody else, the collective family. I mean, you got to stop them.

Maybe you can train them? Maybe you can nudge them. What was that — oh, maybe you can manipulate the dog? But that doesn't work and all liberals would say, how dare you try to manipulate a dog? So, you'd have to put them down. Well, not around the liberals.

That would be the compassionate thing to do, right? Have the dog destroyed.

Well, there's another choice, I guess. You could just live by the Constitution. But they don't want to do that. Trying to figure this out — where do you go from there when people don't comply?

Well, no, there's certainly a difference between the loudmouth television host and the intellectual underpinnings of progressivism and it's a play we've seen before. This is the darkest part of the progressive mindset and it has been showing its ugly face quite a bit lately.

I want to show you some new audiotape now on the same dark network that had this abortion doctor on. I just want you to hear one piece about how abortion is good medicine and what this doctor says about moms and motherhood:

(BEGIN MSNBC VIDEO CLIP)

DR. ELIZABETH NEWHALL, OBSTETRICIAN AND GYNECOLOGIST: I really believe that this is excellent medicine, this is mandatory for public health and for women's health and all of our health, children's health. They're going to have abortions because they care about motherhood. I don't think people realize that.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BECK: Trying to figure that out. These people are so misguided. And I don't want to silence her. I don't want to silence here, I want you to hear her. I want you to ask yourself: Do you believe that? That mothers kill their children because they care about motherhood? We've heard this before, on this program from the BBC, Virginia Ironside. She supports Fabian socialism. Here she is:

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

VIRGINIA IRONSIDE, COLUMNIST AND AUTHOR: I think that if I were a mother of a suffering child, I would be the first to want — I mean, a deeply suffering child — I would be the first to want to put a pillow over its face.

SUSANNA REID, BBC HOST: That's a pretty horrifying thing —

IRONSIDE: What?

REID: — to say that you would put pillow over —

IRONSIDE: Of course I would, if it was a child I really loved who was in agony. I think any good mother would.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BECK: Any good mother. So, it's good medicine and any good mother would do it?

Hey, by the way, while we're here at medicine, researchers have just found the liberal gene that adults have a specific gene and they are more likely to be liberal as adults. Wow. So if I'm a conservative, am I missing a gene? You are born that way into all that kindness and goodness and intellectual prowess?

Hey, wait a minute. Am I in a protected disabled class? Do I get extra ramps or extra money from the government? Can you not fire me now because I'm disabled?

Let's not forget the study from 2003 funded with $1.2 million of your tax dollars. This is what the study found: "Conservatism can be explained psychologically as a set of neurosis rooted in fear and aggression and dogmatism and the intolerance of ambiguity."

OK. Let's just see if I have everything — remember: the president said that we have to punish our enemies earlier this week.

You are an enemy. You are filled with hatred. You are stupid. You are fearful. You're intolerant. You worship a sky god. You are missing a gene. You have no friends — because that was the other part, you're not only missing a gene, but if you didn't have friends growing up, you weren't liked, well, then you're probably a conservative. You have some sort of neurosis. You have a mental disorder and you are a danger.

What should we do with that dog?

I've shown you these books before. I don't want you to take my word on any of these things — any of these things. I want you look them up yourself. This one is the "Phantom Public" by Walter Lippmann. This is a spooky, spooky book. This one is "Eugenics, the Science of Human Life."

These people believed that we could breed better, smarter voters — better citizens. It's what led to the gas chambers.

When will your friends realize that the more things change, the more progressives stay the same? It was the progressive movement that did experiments on people with Roosevelt. It was the progressive movement, Roosevelt and Wilson, that rounded people up for their own safety, for their own good.

You know, America, this is the choice. And it is the choice that has
— this is the oldest choice to man: you can't do it; you can do it. That's what you're voting for, this weekend. You cannot do it; you can do it.

It's the oldest battle, the fight between your inherent right to make your own decisions and the right for someone else to make the decisions for you. It goes — it goes back to the beginning. Go back to Moses and the burning bush.

Moses is standing there, the bush is burning, and the bush say, go to pharaoh. He's like, me? I'm slow in speech. Yes. Wait a minute, you're not missing a gene, are you?

He says to God, who shall I say sent me? And the answer was, I Am that I Am. I Am that I am.

First time I read that when I was a kid, I thought that was — I thought that was a horrible Dr. Seuss line. Check the bible. I Am — it is always capitalized. That is the name of God. "I Am."

I want this segment to haunt you this week. I want you to answer. "I am," what — fill in the blank. "I Am," the name of the God.

Now, let me ask you something — isn't there a commandment, thou shall not take the Lord thy God's name in vain? It's not "God," it's "I Am."

This is the choice: You can't do it; you can do it. Why do I say you can do it? Because you say, I am worthy, I am strong, I am smart, I am loving, I'm charitable, I'm able, I'm creative, I'm peaceful. These are the things "I am."

But what does society teach us? I am not worthy, strong, smart, loving, charitable, able, creative, peaceful.

That's your choice: I am or I am not.

I know what my choice is. Now, why does any of this matter? Well, because if you are worthy, strong, smart, loving, charitable, able, creative, peaceful — if you are — then you are responsible for your own actions. You're responsible for your own life. You're responsible for your own outcomes, and you find that you are responsible for your brothers and sisters and your neighbors.

But if you say you're not capable, you're not responsible, then you're just part of a group where no individual really matters, where no individual can control their own destiny. I'm not responsible for him because I'm not capable of taking care of him! They have to take care of him and me! That's the difference.

This is the secret. They're teaching you — if this is the name of God, if "I Am" is the name of God, whose name is [I Am Not]? Because it's the exact opposite.

In 2008, we put a man in the White House that we knew nothing about because we were inspired apparently by this message:

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

CROWD: Yes, we can. Yes, we can. Yes, we can. Yes, we can. Yes, we can. Yes, we can. Yes, we can. Yes, we can.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BECK: "Yes, we can." That was the winning slogan in 2008: "Yes, we can." But that is not a winning slogan for the republic. It's not a winning slogan for people.

We need to disconnect from the collective that says, "I am not capable, my neighbors are not these things" — and connect with the American spirit that built this country. It's the — it's not the collective, it is a group of individuals that say, Yes, I can. I can do it. I can achieve it. I can build it. I can help that person in need, because I am worthy and strong and smart and charitable and able and peaceful.

When you take your responsibility, when you pick it up for what's happening in your own life, then you will experience true freedom and we will deserve a republic. The realization that you do not have to depend on someone is the most liberating moment you will ever have in your whole life.

America will only continue to be the greatest country in the world if we all resolve that "I am."

If we resolve and remember and believe "I am," and then the winning slogan in 2012 will be "Yes, I can."
