In this chiller based on a Stephen King short story, cross-country travelers Dr. Burt Stanton (Peter Horton) and girlfriend Vicky Baxter (Linda Hamilton) wind up in the not-so-quiet farming community of Gatlin, Nebraska, where children make religious sacrifices out of adults. While boy preacher Isaac Chroner (John Franklin) leads his followers to worship a mysterious corn god, dissenters Job (Robby Kiger) and his sister, Sarah (Anne Marie McEvoy), try to escape. Burt and Vicky quickly join Job and Sarah in an effort to solve the mystery of the demented cult, while trying to stay alive. Children of the Corn grew six sequels.

The Exorcist (1973)

Classic , Horror
Warner Bros.
Ellen Burstyn
Lee J. Cobb

A riveting horror film based on William Peter Blatty's best-seller (he also wrote the screenplay). In the ultimate transformation plot, a 12-year-old girl (Blair) becomes possessed by the devil. Soon, the once sweet child is transformed into a murderous, vomit-spewing, bed-twirling hellhound. A dedicated but naive priest attempts to exorcise Satan from Blair's body–and in the process is forced to confront personal demons of his own. The theatrical release led to outrage, fainting, nausea–and huge box office receipts. The result was two sequels, the second directed by Blatty. The 25th anniversary video release includes a documentary on the making of the film, an introduction by director Friedkin, and a commemorative 52-page book, The Exorcist: The Making of a Classic Motion Picture. Academy Award Nominations: 10, including Best Picture; Best Actress: Ellen Burstyn; Best Supporting Actor: Jason Robards; Best Supporting Actress: Linda Blair; Best Director; Best Cinematography; Best Editing.
