De Palma's commercial breakout, based on a novel by Stephen King, has become something of an old-school classic in the currently resurgent, blood-soaked genre of teenage gorefests. Spacek is a shy teenager with a fiercely religious mother who struggles to come to terms with her emerging sexuality and extraordinary telekinetic powers. Taunted by her more popular high school classmates, Carrie begins to come out of her shell when a member of the cool clique unexpectedly asks her to the senior prom. But just as she's beginning to enjoy the sudden change in her life, a cruel practical joke drives her to a monstrous act of revenge and destruction. Academy Award Nominations: Best Actress: Sissy Spacek; Best Supporting Actress: Piper Laurie.

More than 20 years after being committed for murder, Norman Bates (Perkins) is declared sane and released from the asylum, despite the protest of the late Marion Crane's sister (Miles, returning from the original). The Bates Motel is now a sleazy joint with a sleazy owner (Franz), and Norman finds himself working at a greasy spoon diner. Hoping that her presence will help him cope, he invites a waitress (Tilly) to be his housemate. Then someone keeps phoning Norman claiming to be his dead mother, and it begins to look like his sanity is slipping...

Horror , Suspense
TV14, Universal
Jeff Fahey
Anthony Perkins
Diana Scarwid
The second sequel to Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 masterpiece about murder and madness marks the directorial debut of actor Anthony Perkins, who will forever be remembered for his portrayal of motel-owner-turned-taxidermist Norman Bates. This time out, Norman hires an assistant manager (Jeff Fahey) and finds himself attracted to an ex-nun (Diana Scarwid) while his past is questioned by an investigative reporter (Roberta Maxwell). Perkins brings sympathy to his performance as the tortured Norman, who is still struggling to ignore his mother's evil directives, and he brings a sense of humor to his direction, which includes numerous visual and aural references to Hitchcock's work.
