Wednesday, January 12, 2011 When It Comes to the Tucson Tragedy, the Truth Has

This is a rush transcript from "Glenn Beck," January 12, 2011. This copy may not be in its final form and may be updated.

GLENN BECK, HOST: Welcome to "The Glenn Beck Program."

It is Wednesday. Families in Arizona continue to grieve. They continue to pray. In some cases, they're hoping against all hope for a miracle.

While those people are dealing with the realness of the tragedy -- real life -- many are dealing with it as a game; a chance maybe to fundraise, chance to push some legislation or some regulation through, a chance to push an agenda. And it is getting worse with each passing minute -- despite the latest revelation from a friend of the shooter.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

ZACH OSLER, JARED LOUGHNER'S FRIEND: He did not watch TV. He disliked the news. He didn't listen to political radio.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BECK: Wow, that's a problem, isn't it? I mean, if you are pushing an agenda, that's a problem. He didn't like TV, he didn't watch the news and he didn't listen to political radio.

See, here's the problem that most people that have power in America just don't understand. The truth has no agenda. That's why it will set you free.

On this program, day one, Monday, the day we returned after the shooting, I told you about the shooter and the victims. That's what the story was about -- the victims and the shooter.

Day two, yesterday, was about the media and politicians -- how they're using this tragedy to further their agenda.

Today, we'll wrap things up, day three, this tragedy. Day three, you.

We know how Washington is going to spin this. We know what's unfortunately happening with the victims and we're watching the shooter. But, now, maybe it's time to spend a little time on this story with the angle being you.

Come on.

(MUSIC)

BECK: Hello, America.

On Monday, I issued a challenge to the media and to politicians. I issued a challenge to all Americans in response to the shooting in Arizona. And it was a denunciation of all forms of violence, something that would be pretty easy for all Americans to unite on -- to remember our principles and our values.

Well, I put this out and I don't expect anybody in Washington to actually watch the show. I imagine it makes them uncomfortable. We spent the last two days contacting the hundred senators and the 400-plus representatives in the House. We've plugged this phone in and we actually -- we still use it to dial out. We just don't care if they call us anymore.

We've talked with staffers. We've talked with various House leaders, senators who have spread the challenge around. It's a very simple thing. Here it is. That's it -- half a page long.

The number of people so far who signed this pledge denouncing

violence: 14 -- 14. Over 500 members in the House and Senate, and 14.

Now, I was going to show you the 14 names because I'm proud of those guys, but maybe some other time. I don't want this to turn into -- I mean, this is not the Committee on Un-American Activities. That's for Congress to do. Not a private citizen.

So, I don't want some list going around. I just want you to know it's 14. And I have heard all kind of reasons and excuses.

Some just say they just need more time. Some are afraid to be associated with it. Afraid? Some need more time to read it. It's not really that complex. I don't know if you know this. It's this long.

Others agree with it. Oh, Glenn, I'm telling you, we agree with it. We're in complete agreement here. I'm a little uncomfortable signing anything.

Really?

Some are confused about fundraising or tying their name to me because what will their constituents think? I don't know. You're against violence?

I, really, honestly, I didn't think many politicians would sign this. It was really an exercise to show you them. They're also worried about what it means politically. I don't know. What's going to happen? What's happening? What do we do?

We have to change ourselves so they know we're not that shallow. There are some things that we stand for and they're pretty easy to understand. Nonviolence, you know, shooting anyone as a political statement -- pretty much something I think all of us can get together. Now, that's not what happened Saturday, but I just want to make it very clear, who's for and against.

Now, maybe it's very complex. I mean, I can't imagine why anybody wouldn't sign this. Politicians are trotting themselves out and saying now is the time for unity.

Nancy Pelosi and John Boehner had to have a conference call to issue a time where they could together on another conference call so they could up together an e-mail saying this: "A time for us to come together as a nation."

Congressman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said, quote, "It's a moment for both parties in Congress to come together." Well, that is fantastic.

I love words. I do. And here is half a page of those words. It's my gift to you, something easy to unite on. Fourteen are willing to sign and go out of their comfort zone.

I've created a document that is so easy to sign. It's based on principles and values. Here, it is so easy, and it is something that is made -- it's made to have people who are uncomfortable standing together, stand together.

I issued the challenge on Monday and I said that I would stand with Van Jones and Barack Obama -- people I disagree with vehemently. But I think we can come together on denouncing violence, don't you? Stand shoulder-to-shoulder and declare that there are a few things that are above politics.

But that doesn't mean we stop our political battles -- I mean, with words, not weapons.

So, here is how sick our system is and how sick our system has become. George Soros -- spooky dude -- has funneled money to an organization that has just -- has actually spent money on this: "Glenn Beck's antiviolence pledge, a transparent trap for Democrats."

Darn it! I was this close to catching them in that trap. If it wasn't for those pesky kids!

Yes, I almost had the Democrats caught into that trap of denouncing violence and riots. Imagine if I could have trapped them into signing something like that. Oh, man, I could have gotten on TV and said, look, Democrats don't want violence either!

Wait a minute, that's actually something -- trapped? Getting trapped with petitions -- I know it happens all the time. It happened with Van Jones with "the Truthers." Remember? 9/11 Truthers, he signed up and went to a thing and he was speaking in Arizona, and he was, like, I didn't even know it was a 9/11 Truther when we brought it up. I just signed it.

Oh, I know. It's so easy to do that. It happened to me once. I ended up being in the French military for two whole months. I signed -- I signed a piece of paper, I didn't know what it was. I ended up surrendering to 14 countries by the time I figured that out. But that's another story.

So, let's look at the pledge and see what's so gosh, darn, controversial that only 14 people in Congress are willing to sign it. Here it is:

"I denounce violence regardless of ideological motivation." Have I lost you yet? Do you need your attorney?

"I denounce anyone from the left, the right, or the middle who believes physical violence is the answer to whatever they feel is wrong with our country." I know it's getting dicey!

Next -- "I denounce those who wish to tear down our system and rebuild it in their own image, whatever image that may be." Oh, it's so controversial.

"I denounce those from the left, the right, or the middle who call for riots and violence as an opportunity to bring down and reconstruct our system." That's a trick there because that sounds almost like the last one. Are you sensing the trap yet? Yes, me neither.

"I denounce violent threats and calls for the destruction of our system regardless of their underlying ideology whether they come from the Hutaree militia or Frances Fox Piven."

"I hold those responsible for the violence responsible for the violence."

"I denounce those who attempt to blame political opponents for the acts of madmen."

"I denounce those from the left, the right, or the middle that see violence as a viable alternative to our long-established system of change, made within the constraints of our constitutional republic."

I almost had them on that crazy talk!

Now, some people who haven't signed this, which is almost 500 of them, said, well, I'm still reading it. How much time do you need? You are a slow reader. You're going to have a hard time in Congress because the bills are long.

And then they said, some of them, Oh, I haven't had a chance to look it over. OK. All right. I'll give you more time.

I haven't had time to look it over. That actually is really good news, because -- I mean, you wouldn't want Congress passing anything without reading it over, right?

I mean, they'd never do that, would they? You can never be too careful. Who knows what could be lurking in the hearts of a Glenn Beck nonviolence pledge.

There might be a box to check that would sign them up for a free e- mail newsletter from Victoria's Secret or Fredericks of Hollywood. Or maybe make them a fan on my Facebook page. You never know!

Congress conducts really, really important business and they cannot afford to make any mistakes. And that's why they are so meticulous, so surgical on every bill, every pledge, every word they say. You bet! They never leave a stone unturned. They read the bill.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

REP. JOHN CONYERS, D-MICH.: I love these members that get up and say, "Read the bill." What good is reading the bill if it's a thousand pages and you don't have two days and two lawyers to find out what it means after you read the bill?

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BECK: We called his office. He doesn't need two days or lawyers or -

- it's this long! The nearly 1,000-page health care bill, he didn't have a problem with it. No, he could do it. He could do it.

Here's the financial reform bill. That was good. "Read the bill."

The stimulus bill? Totally cool with. The TARP -- this is a page- turner. Can I tell you something? I read it last night for the third time.

The idea of TARP was proposed on September 20th and it was signed into law on October 3rd. But this? No. No, it's -- I need more time.

Can I tell you something? It might as well be in Chinese, which in the end, Congress, might be better if you just write all of this in Chinese, you know, because they'll eventually be running our country anyway. It will be easier for them.

Now, the other explanation we're giving for not signing this nonviolence pledge is "the trap." The trap -- I am so stupid in my insidious genius that it amazes me that I can even tie my shoes while I put Sky Lab back into space.

The names on the pledge, the infamous trap, the Hutaree Militia and Frances Fox Piven. Who didn't see this one coming? Yes.

Well, Congress, many members were not sure about those two names, so the rigorous, congressional fact-checking process was springing into action the minute that it was sent in. You wouldn't want to actually denounce somebody you actually disagree with. For instance, the Hutaree Militia. Let's look at the Hutarees for just a minute.

Right now, I know you're saying, "The Hutaree Militia? I'm on the fence," because who knows, it might be your friendly local neighborhood militia with a spooky name. According to the DOJ, they formed and began training circa 2008. OK. Well, maybe I don't believe the DOJ.

Their name means "Christian warrior." OK, I'm for Christian warriors. Onward Christian soldiers, warriors -- what's the difference?

The FBI considers them a radical extremist group. OK, but let's say I don't trust the FBI. Well, OK. Their enemies include government -- state and local -- and police officers. Uh-oh! Sensing trouble.

They plan to kill members of law enforcement in a number of ways. Do I need to give you the ways? OK. They plan on killing police officers after routine traffic stops or at their homes or -- I love this one -- Hutarees say let's ambush police officers in rural communities. And then, if that doesn't work, we'll call 911 and make false 911 calls and when the cops show up, we'll kill them. And after they kill the officer, they want to ambush the funeral motorcades of the officer with weapons of mass destruction.

I mean, who could possibly go out on a limb and condemn them? I mean, what are you, just anti-Hutaree all of a sudden? Oh, by the way, after they do all that, they just plan to meet at rallying points and wage war using IEDs, ambushes and other fighting positions. But really, aren't the Hutaree just dog piling now? Really?

No problem signing the health care bill. But the Hutarees? Oh, I don't know. I sense and smell a trap.

Well, we better think this one over. I mean, I could see why you're hesitant. You know, they might also rescue puppy dogs and donate their time to soup kitchens as long as there's not a cop there. I'm not sure. Or maybe, it's Congress. Maybe the Hutarees are a very important 501(c)3 and a lot of fundraising is done by the cop killers.

The Hutaree militia, really, they make the Westboro Baptist dopes look like they're only followers of the devil and not the devil himself.

And that's what's holding up the signature?

Well, it's either the Hutarees or the other very controversial name on the nonviolent pledge. Yes. Remember, when I say you have to be against violence from the so-called left or the so-called right, violence is bad from either side.

So, the Hutarees or maybe it's this woman, Frances Fox Piven. She's 78. She looks sweet, doesn't she? I mean, you wouldn't definitely, definitely wouldn't want to rush to judgment on her. I mean, sure, it's true that she has half a century of non-wavering consistent messages of collapsing our system through violent riots and uprisings.

But she is 78 -- you never know, maybe she's going to have a change of heart tomorrow and break out the knitting at any moment. She might start baking cookies and bring the grandkids in around and talk about antiviolence.

Boy, wouldn't that be embarrassing if you signed the pledge, right? It could happen. She's 78. Clock is ticking.

Piven has called for riots. Now, this is a long, long time ago -- three weeks ago. So, I mean, OK, three weeks ago. Do you even remember how old you were three weeks ago? She wrote, quote, "So where are the angry crowds, the demonstrations, the sit-ins and the unruly mobs? After all, the injustice is apparent."

Well, grandma, thank you for checking in.

She also said we should be more like Greece and London. Well, I like Greece and London. Oh, except now. An effective -- quoting -- "an effective movement of the unemployed will have to look something like the strikes and the riots that spread across Greece in response to the austerity measures forced by the Greek government on the European Union. Or like the student protests that recently spread with lightning speed all across England."

Well, let me see -- let me give you a recap here. You see these behind there, that we got the cities burning. Do we have it? There, a city is burning. Ain't that great? That's Greece. Here they are there, Greece.

Wow! It's almost like they are the Hutaree. They are taking it out on the police. Well, I'm not against that with the Hutarees. Why would I be against it here?

Now, here's Greece. At least 42 people have been arrested, 100 people injured, three people have died. Oh, and they took the finance minister and they almost beat him to death in the street. So, I can see why grandma, Frances Fox Piven, would be saying we should be more like this.

In the London student riots, which she brought up three weeks ago, 50,000 people took to the streets, more than 150 people were arrested in just one day. Here they are. Do we have the picture of them in the car? This is so great. Oh, they're beating the police, just like Hutarees.

Here's the -- here's the prince and Camilla in the car as they're going by and people are trying to break in the car and kill them. They are only shouting, "Off with their heads." But that's it. And only 12 police officers were injured in that incident.

So, Frances Fox Piven, that was three weeks ago. Has she cooked any cookies for the grandkids yet?

I can see why that would give you pause to sign something that says, I am against things like this, where they are shouting "Off with their heads" and they mean it!

So -- by the way, Frances Fox Piven, her husband, whatever, they worked together on Cloward and Piven. And there was a strategy to end poverty, and it was inspired here by the riots. Meaning, they could collapse the system and have a revolution, if they could just get people hooked on welfare and then take it away, like an austerity movement. And then people would just start setting things on fire and kill cops. Wouldn't that be great? That was the inspiration.

Tough decision, Congress. Take a stand against violence or go with the Hutarees who want to kill cops and against Frances Fox Piven, who just wants to blow things up, kill cops and have violent riots. Oh, I don't know which one to pick!

I'm going to make it easy on Congress, really, easy. So maybe they can fast track it like they do with all the other thousand-plus page bills. I'll show you how we're going to fast-track that, next.
