Thursday, January 13, 2011 Memorials Aren't Rallies; What Was the Tucson Crowd

Thursday, January 13, 2011

This is a rush transcript from "Glenn Beck," January 13, 2011. This copy may not be in its final form and may be updated.

GLENN BECK, HOST: Welcome to "The Glenn Beck Program."

From everything I saw last night, I watched the president's speech, and I thought he gave a tremendous speech. Maybe the first one in his career that was just out-of-the-park American, bringing together all of us, put a stop to the end of the games. He requested that people would stop finger-pointing.

Thank you, Mr. President. You were indeed, last night, the president of the United States of America.

Now, I can't say the same thing for the crowd that was in attendance. It was clear -- this is not the president's fault -- but I don't know what they were thinking.

This was a memorial. At times, they reacted like it was, at best, a high school pep rally.

It was approaching the debacle that was the Wellstone Memorial. I don't know if you remember that.

RICK KAHN, FRIEND OF SEN. PAUL WELLSTONE: We are going to win this election for Paul Wellstone. We are going to win this election for Paul Wellstone. We are going to win this election for Paul Wellstone.

(APPLAUSE)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: We will win.

BECK: It got worse from there.

I don't understand -- when this has changed in America, celebrating the memory of somebody's life still in a dignified manner. Last night, I thought, was over the line -- again, not from the president.

There were the t-shirts that were involved. T-shirts with the slogan "Together We Thrive" printed on them. I've never been to a memorial where you got a commemorative t-shirt.

And then they sloganized the whole memorial services -- a slogan, a t-shirt, catchy phrases. Tonight, I'm going to show you where this all came from and where it leads with history.

I'm going to show you why I believe the 20th century is less likely to be remembered as the golden era of America if we educate ourselves, and should be remembered as the era of the big lie. What you don't know because you never questioned -- tonight.
