Season's Greetings: Patriot Day a day of Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims

Season's Greetings: Patriot Day a day of Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of the Terrorist Attacks on September 11, 2001

I bid you Season's Greetings of Patriot Day a day of Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of the Terrorist Attacks on September 11, 2001.

On 9/11 at 8:46 a.m., American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the World Trade Center's North Tower. The tower collapsed later that day.

On 9/11 at 9:03 a.m., United Airlines Flight 175 hit the South Tower. This tower also collapsed.

On 9/11 at 9:37 a.m., American Airlines Flight 77 was flown into the Pentagon.

On 9/11 at 10:03 a.m., United Airlines Flight 93 crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The intended target of this hijacked flight was either the United States Capitol Building or the White House, but the passengers on board - having heard of the earlier attacks - courageously rushed the terrorists in the cockpit. As a result, the plane crashed before reaching its target, and hundreds of other Americans were probably saved.

In total, almost 3000 Americans died on 9/11 including all of the passengers of those four planes.

These attacks on our nation forever changed us.

It's important each year to pay tribute to the Americans who died that day. And it's our duty to give thanks to the thousands of men and women in uniform who serve every day and have given their lives since in defense of our freedoms here at home and overseas. Their steadfast vigilance has prevented other attacks on American soil.

On the 10th Anniversary of 9/11, remember those who lost their lives that day especially the first responders who perished in their attempt to prevent further loss of life. And pray for their families and friends as today marks another year gone by without their loved ones.

In the United States, Patriot Day occurs on September 11 of each year, designated in memory of the 2,977 killed in the September 11, 2001 attacks. Most Americans refer to the day as "Nine-Eleven (9/11)," "September Eleventh," or some variation thereof. Initially, the day was called the Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of the Terrorist Attacks on September 11, 2001.

U.S. House of Representatives Joint Resolution 71 was approved by a vote of 407–0 on October 25, 2001. It requested that the President designate September 11 of each year as "Patriot Day." President George W. Bush signed the resolution into law on December 18, 2001 (as Public Law 107-89). It is a discretionary day of remembrance. On September 4, 2002, President Bush used his authority created by the resolution and proclaimed September 11, 2002 as Patriot Day.

On this day, the President directs that the American flag be flown at half-staff at individual American homes, at the White House, and on all U.S. government buildings and establishments, home and abroad. The President also asks Americans to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 A.M. (Eastern Daylight Time), the time the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

History

The bill to make September 11 a mourning day was introduced in the U.S. House on October 25, 2001, by Republican Vito Fossella (R-NY) with 22 co-sponsors, among them eleven Democrats and eleven Republicans.
