Monday, January 17, 2011 Arizona Shooting Doesn't Follow Media's Script | Glenn

Monday, January 17, 2011

This is a rush transcript from "Glenn Beck," January 17, 2011. This copy may not be in its final form and may be updated.

GLENN BECK, HOST: Welcome to "The Glenn Beck Program."

I want you to remember this -- you're an idiot. You can't think for yourself. You just do whatever the guy on television or radio tells you to do.

You know that's not right. But there are studies that are out now. Here they are from liberal talk radio.

(BEGIN AUDIO CLIP)

JOHN DEAN, FORMER NIXON COUNSEL: What the studies show, the empirical studies over -- almost, you know, well over a half a century of studying this issue -- they really show that about 25 percent of a given population easily follows into the authoritarian personality-types.

(END AUDIO CLIP)

BECK: This is great. We learned about this last week in Bernays. But it was 100 years ago. This is today.

Twenty-five percent of the American people -- or any group -- want authoritarian rule. They want to be told what to think, what to eat, where to drive, how to live.

(BEGIN AUDIO CLIP)

DEAN: These are people who, as I said, like to be told what -- how to think, what to do. Some of them who were -- who were more aggressive in their personality want to jump out in front and say, "Follow me." But they will follow their leader until they get their turn. And they look upon others who don't see the world as they do as outsiders.

(END AUDIO CLIP)

BECK: Got it? So, 25 percent thinks the 75 percent are the ones who've got it wrong. And they're viewed, those 75 percent, as outsiders.

Gee, where is he going with this?

(BEGIN AUDIO CLIP)

DEAN: If I say, when you have about 25 percent of the population of this personality ilk, you are always going the have these people out there. And they are very susceptible to the direction they get from their leaders.

(END AUDIO CLIP)

BECK: Or their professors or anyone who will tell them, they are really, really smart. Just listen to me. You see?

So, these people are out there. And they're just very, very dumb. And they just sit there and they wait for orders from their rulers or whatever -- whoever will jump -- what did he say? Leaders from other group -- from the group and they're aggressive and they'll jump out.

Whatever the message is, they'll do it, because they can't control their actions.

Oh, OK. I think I see where he's going now.

(BEGIN AUDIO CLIP)

DEAN: That's why I think it's very irresponsible for the Palins, the Becks, the O'Reillys and the people who feed this violent atmosphere, they should realize that the people they're dealing with. They're smart enough to look at this information and know indeed they can provoke this kind of behavior.

(END AUDIO CLIP)

BECK: OK. Got it? Palin, me, O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh -- all of us -- we're smart enough to know that 25 percent of the population that listens to us are all the dummies that want to be controlled and they'll do whatever we say.

I've never met a single person at a Tea Party rally -- I've never met a fan of mine that says, I am so sick of this freedom stuff. Just give me -- just give me welfare and let me just sit around. Just tell me what to do. Just, please, Mrs. Obama, tell me what to eat.

I haven't met that Tea Partygoer.

See, what you're being told is not exactly a lie. It's a perversion of the truth. It's always very clever when you take the truth and then you pervert it just a bit. What is that called? Oh, I remember what that's called, evil.

Come on. Let's look at evil in the eye tonight.

(MUSIC)

BECK: It seems to me that reality -- by the way, hello, America.

Reality doesn't seem to match the script that's coming out of our television sets. The Arizona shooter, it didn't matter to anyone. The script was prewritten.

It's kind of like, have you ever seen when a celebrity dies, especially an old celebrity, the obits are out. They got the video rolling within minutes after that person dies because they knew it was coming. And they were waiting for it. They had already written it.

Kind of like the media is just waiting for what they know is going to happen. Some lunatic on the right is going to start shooting. And they've got that script all ready to go.

It's a storyline. It's proof positive. It's going to happen. Twenty-five percent of the population.

The proof is in the Arizona coverage. The kid wasn't of any clear ideology. Did you see him? He looks nuts! Hello? And if you had to pick -- after you learned everything about him -- if you had to pick an ideology, his friends said it was from the left. OK. It wasn't his ideology that made him do it. He was crazy.

But it doesn't matter if he was from the left. It's close enough for the media. It's a mad man shooting. It's got to be someone indoctrinated by Rush Limbaugh.

Look, this isn't the first time that reality hasn't matched the script coming out of the mainstream media.

Here we are today on Martin Luther King Day. I want to take you back to the 1960s when we start today. I want to take you back and ask a couple of questions.

Well, first of all, let me go here. What were they saying about Martin Luther King in the 1960s? The first thing they said about Martin Luther King was this: He helped "pave the way for violence... by preaching civil disobedience," all right? Another article said -- quote -- "We can't wonder what King's organization preaches and what it excoriates aren't in reality closely related." And finally -- quote -- "Responsible people in Chicago have accused Martin Luther King and/or his staff members of stimulating violence, the type which led to the rioting. The charge is a valid one."

Got it? So, here they are, blaming Martin Luther King. They're blaming him for the violence. That's the opposite of what he was.

But this is the establishment. This is the elitist view. It's what they wanted to print at the time. That was the script.

So, it didn't matter. It didn't matter what people were seeing on TV. It was clearly not Martin Luther King's fault.

It might have been Malcolm X -- not related to the Martin Luther King movement. It was not William Ayers -- I mean, William Ayers was doing it, but William Ayers wasn't connected to Martin Luther King. Black Panthers, not King.

But that didn't matter to the media. The media just stuck to what was previously written because the elites had their story.

Just like today. Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, me, Fox -- all of us -- grouped together and held responsible for things we're not doing -- in fact, things that we despise. We don't want to be ruled and told how to live and neither do you.

We tell you on this program every night, question with boldness. Question everything. Don't take my word for it. Do you tell that to sheep?

But that doesn't matter. The establishment has its story and it doesn't like to change. Now, this is the same thing that happened in the 1960s. I just showed you the newspapers.

Now, let me show you another incident that happened. It was December 10, 1964. It was an incident that happened at the Louisiana shoe shop.

The owner of that shop was Frank Morris. And we have a picture here. Here he is, this is the guy in the visor here.

He was asleep in the back room of his shoe store. Morris was liked. He did business with both sides -- black and white at the time -- and that really didn't please some racists. They didn't like the inclusiveness.

While he was sleeping in the back of his shop, and then he woke because he heard glass shatter. Three white assailants doused his shop with gasoline and then surrounded the place using guns to keep him inside. They set his shop on fire.

Three white guys did it.

He managed to run out and two police officers helped him to the hospital. But by the time he got out, he was so badly burned that you couldn't even recognize who he was and he died four days later.

Well, what happened to the white guys? Well, they didn't solve the case. Oh, they didn't solve the case. And nobody was really even looking. It was quickly forgotten. It was ignored largely, because it didn't fit the media script.

The violence at the time the media was assuring everyone was coming from the Martin Luther King crowd. So, Martin Luther King, what, hired three white guys to do this?

So when it didn't fit, they just moved on.

Just a few years ago, Morris' name popped up on a list of unsolved civil rights crimes. The FBI reopened the case in 2007. And now, a journalist took interest. And they found previously ignored witnesses, including an eyewitness account, several of them. And now, even a suspect has been named.

Imagine, if the media would have done their job and looked for the truth. Not the script, but the truth, when it mattered.

I tell you this story about Mr. Morris because -- well, not as dramatic, the willful blindness today. As you will see by the end of this hour, don't miss tonight's episode -- you see what was happening first of all on ABC this week.

Sorry, rhetorical question. Of course, you didn't. Nobody watches. Christiane Amanpour is on. She hosted a town hall style discussion in Tucson, Arizona. It was called "After the Tragedy, An American Conversation Continues."

So they had survivors on. Tea Party members were there and the host of others that were all involved in the story.

But at the end of the show, one of the people who survived -- his name was Eric J. Fuller -- he didn't like one of the comments from the Tea Party leader Trent Humphries.

Now, I'm going to play this back to you and you can barely hear what he says. But you'll see, after he makes the comment, the Tea Party leader goes on, makes another comment and then he looks down again because he hears more talk.

I want you to listen, first of all, at what Humphries is saying, the Tea Party leader. Listen to what he's saying and then hear what somebody else says off-camera. Watch.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

TRENT HUMPHRIES, TEA PARTY LEADER: And I think there is a time for this debate, but for what we felt and saw right now, I'm not sure that applause and things going on, are appropriate right now, until we actually maybe had the funerals finished for people that suffered and died. My neighbor is one of those people. I loved that man.

ERIC J. FULLER: You're dead.

HUMPHRIES: I want to see -- I want to see some introspection maybe from the people, before the national debate happens. It's very well to have those things, but something has to happen with everybody.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BECK: OK. Now watch, he looks down. He's up talking and he is saying, look, we shouldn't be applauding. What is this? And then Fuller says, "You're dead," while holding up a picture of Humphries.

The news, they didn't do anything. They did nothing. After the show, police removed him. He was later arrested and charged with threats and intimidation and disorderly conduct. Humphries said, look, man, I don't want to arrest you but I don't want to press charges but they're telling me I should. They're also telling Humphries that he shouldn't show his face in public.

Now, I don't think I have to tell you what the media would have done if this idiot was a Fox News fan or had ever visited Sarah Palin's website. In fact, another network, which no one is watching, and again I'm not blaming the other network, that's why I'm not naming them. I don't want it misconstrued. One of their hosts said the night before it happened, America should listen to this guy. He makes a lot of sense. The guy who said, "You're dead" made a threat and then was screaming all kind of obscenities when he got outside.

You imagine what would happen if Sarah Palin would have endorsed someone who did this the very next day. By the way, George Soros' money has gone to celebrate this guy as well. Using what they thought was his impenetrable credibility being a survivor of the Arizona shooting, they just went right ahead and endorsed him. They foamed at the mouth and rushed to quote him as he denounced Fox News.

Here he is. Media Matters -- "Arizona shooting victim criticizes Beck, Palin and Fox News." "I would stand with them and scream whores at them."

He said Sarah Palin should be incarcerated for treason. And "If you're going to scream hatred and preach hatred, you're going to sow it after a while if you got a soapbox like they've got."

This is something chastising people like me or Sarah Palin for political rhetoric. They say that's what they've got. "They've got a surplus of demented ding bats and wackos."

Well, at least he got one thing right, there are a lot of wackos out there. He should know obviously.

As of yet, Media Matters or the other network, neither of them have offered a denouncement of him and his death threat. If this guy was a Fox fan or a Glenn Beck fan or had a copy of a book that I or Rush or Sarah had in the seat of his car -- lead story everywhere.

But here's how ABC News decided to address the direct threat made on their own show, after their show aired, the very last word, they said this.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

CHRISTIANE AMANPOUR, ABC NEWS: As our town hall concluded, one of the victims of the shooting in our audience became agitated and was detained by security.

James Eric Fuller, who was shot twice last Saturday, appeared to direct a threat towards a member of the Tea Party in our audience when he spoke.

Fuller was charged with a misdemeanor and involuntarily committed, according to the Pima County Sheriff's Office.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BECK: Appeared? He held a picture of Humphries and said, "You're dead." He appeared to make a threat?

ABC, can I tell you something? It really, I mean, it's sad how little you value your credibility. But in the end, by your choice, it will be what puts you out of business and everybody else. If you and the others continue to peddle half-truths and out-and-out lies -- I mean, people won't watch or listen or trust.

Maybe you should go back and read the story of Frank Morris. Ignoring it doesn't make it go away. You're dishonoring the credibility, any credibility that you might have left.

The show on ABC was called "Having an American Conversation." And they wanted to continue the conversation to truly seek answers. Well, the answers they're looking for happened. Violence rears its ugly head with their cameras rolling.

Actual news happened during their broadcast and ABC chose not to run it. Instead, they brush it under the rug and say, oh, by the way, this little thing happened and we're not sure what it is. Move on people, nothing to see here.

They want to report a pre-written script.

Now, because of a friend of mine just started running ABC News, I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt, that maybe ABC thought they were trying to be fair and didn't want more uprising. But that doesn't really make sense unless you believe people are stupid and can't handle the truth. I do not.

If they didn't show it, which they didn't, they just brush it under the rug, that's not a news. That's not news. That's a problem with your news.

I'd like to paraphrase MLK and my apologies to his family and everyone else for having me paraphrase it today and butcher his eloquent words. But, basically, we need to wake up and realize that we're all brothers or we're going to stay asleep and we're all going to die fools. We are brothers. Left, right, middle, it doesn't matter. We're Americans.

And there is a problem in the country and ignoring it is not going to make it go away. I'm going to go back to the beginning of the show. The poll that I showed from John Dean, a former counselor to Nixon, on a liberal radio show. About 25 percent of the given population easily follows authoritarian personality type -- 25 percent.

Well, how many liberals are there according to, what was it, studies and experts? How many liberals? There's about 21 percent of the population.

So, I guess close enough, they want to be told how to live.

They weren't describing the right. They're describing cattle.

I'm going to go over something here today. And if you watch the show, you get it. But, please, let me just drum this in as best I can for the next couple of days because this is the same thing that happened at the beginning when I was on the progressive thing. And I said, look, if you want to understand what's going on, you got to look at progressives. And I took you back to Woodrow Wilson, remember how people were like, oh, stop with Woodrow Wilson. But it took a while before people went oh, my gosh. It takes a while before you get that "I get it" moment.

What I started to explain last week is now coming together in some people's heads and it is critical for you to understand. It's as critical as the progressive movement itself was.

Let me go back to what we -- what we have here so far. People are cattle. Here, study show experts say 21 percent -- or 25 percent -- want to be just told how to live. We've shown you a few important concepts since the beginning of the year.

We showed you the steps successfully used to topple governments like the Czech Republic in 1948. This was outlined by congressional report in the 1960s. Have a solution, have people in power up at the very top, create problems, overwhelm and collapse the system, get the people at the bottom to rise up and the top will come down with their solution. That is how they took over Czechoslovakia in '48.

Now, controlling man -- this is last week. We showed you the father of propaganda -- ad man, Edward Bernays. He was a progressive, but more importantly, he didn't believe in democracy the way you believe in it, or I believe in it or the Founders did. Yes, the Founders didn't believe people were cattle, but he did.

His work on shaping and changing how the masses think was used by Joseph Goebbels in Germany. He literally studied Bernays' books. He later regretted it, said it was a problem. And he could see how it could be used for evil.

But he didn't recognize his whole cattle theory and how it was evil because he was busy with bacon and eggs. Bacon and eggs, it wasn't a breakfast staple until Bernays introduced it.

But what you eat for breakfast isn't the important thing. Bernays believed that people were stupid. They couldn't be trusted with their vote. And he and his uncle, Sigmund Freud, believed that people just couldn't be trusted because deep down inside, they're violent animals. They all, I guess, according to Freud, want a relationship with their moms. I don't get it. And it's been greatly discredited, but his ideas have lived on with the left.

I will expose him again. And tie all three of these together with the news of the day. Expose them and show how we're being exploited yet again.

You're not part of the 25 percent. Open up your eyes. Learn. Question everything with boldness.
