Talking with a Star: My One-On-One Interview with Miss Bristol Palin

Yesterday, I had the honor of speaking with the amazing and inspiring Bristol Palin. As a single mom, public speaker and advocate for abstinence and the pro-life cause, as well as a contestant on ABC's hit show Dancing with the Stars (DWTS), Bristol is a super-busy young woman, but was kind enough to speak with me about her appearance on DWTS, her advocacy campaign and what she sees for her and Tripp in the future. It was a blast to talk with Bristol, and I thank her again for taking the time to speak with me. Bristol is both charming and witty, and it was fun to share some laughs and light-hearted conversation with her. While so many well-known young people are caught up living the fast-paced Hollywood lifestyle, it is refreshing to have a young woman of Bristol's caliber taking a stand and making a difference. I hope you enjoy reading this Q&A profile piece as much as I did writing it.

What was it about Dancing with the Stars that made you accept the invitation to be on the show?

It was just getting out of my comfort zone and doing something that I've never done before and just trying to get out there and have fun for a little bit.

After visiting your beautiful state this summer, I loved how beautiful and majestic it is, and how different it is from California. How are you adjusting to life out here in California? What has been the biggest adjustment?

It's like night and day; I feel like I am in two different worlds. Alaska's so mellow and calm, and the people there are different, compared to here. Everything around here is rowdy and fast-paced and traffic all the time and thousands and thousands of people, but it's nice staying, and there are pros and cons to both.

What is the one thing you miss most about Alaska?

Well, besides my family, I just miss the calm and the clarity of Alaska and how clean everything is there and the air there. I just miss the whole atmosphere.

As a Californian, I know how liberal the media in my state are. How has the media treated you thus far? Have you found the media coverage of you to be fair and accurate for the most part?

For the most part, I haven't seen that much negative stuff, but I don't read blogs, and I don't really study up on it and wouldn't really know what people were saying about me, but there's been a few articles that have been written that have just been completely made-up stories, but that's just to be expected. For the most part, though, I think I have been fairly treated.

How outrageous do you find certain media stories you hear reported about you or your family? Most recently, you have had to deal with exaggerated stories like "nacho gate" after your appearance at Rumrunners, in Alaska, to watch your dancing partner, Mark Ballas, perform and "boo gate" after your mom's appearance in the audience at Dancing with the Stars.

All these things can be proven wrong. If you go to Rumrunners, there's a huge menu, there's a children's menu there. You know, there's little kids running around at Rumrunners- it's a bar and grill just like Red Robin or Chilies or places like that, so that's so easy to prove wrong.

As for boo gate, watch the tapes- just pay attention, and you would know that they [the audience] went nuts when my mom's name was called.

How much fun did your mom and sister, Piper, have coming to watch you perform last week?

They had a blast. Piper was so bummed that she's not going to be able to make for this week's performance. They had such a good time, and I was so glad they were able to make it. They were behind the scenes with me the whole time too and in my trailer before and after the show, and it was just such a wonderful experience for them, and I can't wait for them to come back.

I remember reading an interview in which you said how excited you were that performing on DWTS would allow you to spend more time with Tripp. How has he reacted to seeing you practice? Does he try to shake his booty too right there with you?

He's been to a few of my rehearsals, just at the end. He walks in there just amazed by all the mirrors. Once the music is on, though, Tripp has rhythm. He really gets going, and he can raise the roof.

Has there been a friendly rivalry between you and Mrs. Brady herself, Florence Henderson given the fact that her partner is Mark's dad and fellow professional dancer Corky Ballas?

No, there haven't been any rivalries that I've seen between any of the cast members, and I'm so thankful for that. We're all so supportive of one another. During rehearsals, we'll go into their room and watch their performance. It sounds like some cliché, but it's just such an awesome experience. Everyone's been so great, and I'm just so thankful that we all get along the way that we do…. We're all in such a vulnerable position, and we're all experiencing this and learning this as we go, and seriously, it's just been wonderful.

If your mom does decide to run for president, as a woman yourself, how excited would you be at the prospect that your mom could be the United States' first female president?

Oh, I'd be thrilled. I wish my mom would run, but who knows what she'll do next. I think that she would be the best fit for our country right now, and I think that people will realize that and want her to run, but it would be amazing, and I would be so proud of her.

Your mom and Ronald Reagan are two of my role models. Who are your role models? As an inspiring, young woman yourself, whom do you look up to?

I look up to bunch of different people. I definitely look up to my mom…. Definitely my mom and my dad as well. They're both just great people.

It is a known fact that parents teach their children lessons as they grow, but children also teach their parents. What is the biggest thing Tripp has taught you?

He's taught me many different things, but the first thing that comes to mind is to just stop and enjoy the time that we have together- just stop and get down on my knees and play with him and to enjoy moments with him.

How do balance motherhood and your careers? When you do find a little time for yourself, what do you like to do to have fun?

Well, there is no time for myself…. It's definitely a juggling act, and it can be stressful at times, but I've got such an awesome support system. I've got great girls down here helping me with Tripp… it's a juggling act, but so many moms across the country do it.

What does the future hold for Bristol Palin? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I don't know. I'm only 19 years old, and I know that there are tons and tons and tons of opportunities for me out there. I definitely want to write a book, I want to continue my public-speaking engagements; I would love to do correspondent work for a news station or something like that. I know there are just so many opportunities, and I'm just figuring out what I want to do and what's best for Tripp and myself.

Finally, can you give us a little sneak peak about what we can expect this week on Dancing with the Stars?

Well, this week were doing the Fox Trot. It's a slower dance, and the judges told me last week to work on my emotions and play an actress during the whole thing, so hopefully, I'll pull it off…. It'll be good; it'll be fun.

Well, said, Bristol. Well said!!! Go out there and have fun. This Conservative Girl with a Voice and thousands and thousands of others will be cheering you on!!! Dance, Bristol, Dance!!! And Vote, Readers, Vote!!!
