America's Best Days Only 25% Prefer a Government With More Services, Higher Taxe
America's Best Days Only 25% Prefer a Government With More Services, Higher Taxes Wednesday, October 20, 2010 Most voters (65%) say they prefer a government with fewer services and lower taxes rather than one with more services and higher taxes. A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey finds that only 25% of Likely U.S. Voters favor a government with more services and higher taxes instead. A majority of voters have supported a government with fewer services and lower taxes since regular tracking on this question began in early November 2006. (To see survey question wording, click here). Consistent with past polling, most Republicans (86%) and the majority (77%) of voters not affiliated with either political party prefer a smaller government, while most Democrats (50%) favor a more active one. But nearly one-third (32%) of Democrats now like a government with fewer services and lower taxes. As is often the case, there is a noticeable divide between the Political Class and Mainstream voters: 70% of the Political Class supports more services and higher taxes, while 78% of Mainstream voters prefer fewer services and lower taxes. The survey of 1,000 Likely Voters was conducted on October 18-19, 2010 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology. http://www.pulseopinionresearch.com/ http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/about_us/methodology Voters nationwide are almost evenly divided on the future of our country. Forty percent (40%) say America's best days are ahead of us, but 45% say they're in the past. Fifteen percent (15%) more are not sure. These findings, too, have remained fairly consistent since March of last year. Republicans and unaffiliated voters are more pessimistic about the future of the United States than Democrats. Seventy percent (70%) of voters nationwide feel that when people move to America they should adopt American culture. This finding also has changed little over the years. Just 16% think newcomers should put more emphasis on maintaining the culture of their home country. An overwhelming majority (70%) of voters believe American society is generally fair and decent, showing little change for several years now. Just 22% say society is generally unfair and discriminatory. When asked how President Obama views society, however, only 41% of voters say he looks at society as being generally fair and decent. Forty-five percent (45%) say he views society as unfair and discriminatory. Thirteen percent (13%) are undecided. Despite voter pessimism about America's future, 59% still believe it would be better if our allies do what the United States wants more often. Only 13% think America should more often follow the lead of its allies. Twenty-three percent (23%) say neither is the better option. (See Crosstabs). However, just 44% of voters think Obama feels our allies should do what the United States wants more often. Twenty-eight percent (28%) believe he thinks the opposite is true and would rather see the country do what our allies want. Another 20% say the president prefers neither option.
