52% Feel Tax Increases Will Hurt the Economy

The message from voters remains clear: Tax cuts yes, tax hikes no.

Most U.S. voters (52%) continue to believe that tax increases will hurt the economy, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Just 22% think tax increases are good for the economy, while 16% say they have no impact.

Fifty-five percent (55%) say tax cuts, on the other hand, will help the economy. Twenty-three percent (23%) disagree and say they're bad for the economy. Fifteen percent (15%) feel tax cuts will have no impact.

Most Republicans and voters not affiliated with either major party believe tax increases will hurt the economy and tax cuts will help. Democrats are closely divided on both of these questions.

In early May, 69% of Americans said they were not willing to have their taxes raised to deal with deficits that are projected to rise over the next decade.

The survey of 1,000 Likely Voters was conducted on June 9-10, 2010 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology

Similarly, when it comes to government spending, voters like cutting more than increasing.

Just 24% of voters feel that increases in government spending will help the economy, while 56% say these increases will hurt the economy.  Ten percent (10%) say increases in government spending will have no impact on the economy.  These findings, too, show little change for several years now.

In late April, most voters favored a new government program designed to create jobs but still think ultimately tax cuts and decisions by private business leaders will do more good in terms of job creation.

Just under half (49%) say decreases in government spending will help the economy.  Twenty-eight percent (28%) feel such decreases will hurt the economy.  Twelve percent (12%) say they will have no impact on the economy, while 11% are undecided.

Forty-five percent (45%) say they would rather vote for a candidate who promises to oppose all tax increases than one who will raise taxes only on the rich.  Forty percent (40%) prefer a candidate who promises tax hikes on the rich.  Fifteen percent (15%) more are not sure.

Leading up to President Obama's inauguration in late January 2009, the plurality of voters favored a candidate who would only raise taxes on the rich.  Since then, however, most voters prefer a candidate who will oppose all tax increases.

Separate polling conducted in late April found that 46% of voters expect their own taxes to go up during the Obama administration.

Earlier this year, a plurality of voters (41%) preferred a budget deficit with tax cuts over a balanced budget that requires higher taxes.
