Lesser of Two Evils

Wednesday, August 04, 2010
By Glenn Beck

The people spoke in Missouri on Tuesday, voting overwhelmingly to reject Obama's mandate that forces people to buy health insurance. It's going to be fun to watch the White House explain this one.

Of course, we already know what they're going to do. Barack Obama will say that conservatives and Republicans just want to go back to the same old ideas and block progress:

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: They have not come up with a single, solitary new idea to address the challenges of the American people. They don't have a single idea that's different from George Bush's ideas — not one.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

The president is right. The Republicans don't have a lot of new ideas. He should talk to the Tea Party people. But Mr. President, I first heard your ideas back in 1848. You've got ideas that have unquestionably failed — and failed spectacularly — every single time they've been tried throughout history.

They'll just say, Oh, it's never been done right. But, broken economy after broken economy, continent after continent, I'm not sure it will ever be done right. I'm not exactly eager to give it another whirl, are you?

But I will say that Barack Obama is right in one regard when he says the GOP hasn't recognized their mistakes:

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

OBAMA: Understand, it'd be one thing if the Republicans had seen the error in their ways.

(LAUGHTER)

(END VIDEO CLIP)

He's right. Republicans have not had their come-to-Jesus moment. They are still doing the same thing. Take Trent Lott on the Tea Parties: "We don't need a lot of Jim DeMint disciples... as soon as they get here we need to co-opt them."

It's big government politics as usual, only the GOP is slightly smaller than the Democrats. They're all progressives. And that's the biggest problem our country is facing today: You aren't being presented with a real choice. You're forced to choose the lesser of two evils.

Where have I heard that before? Oh that's right, from Carol Quigley, it's in "The Overton Window": "The argument that the two parties should represent opposed ideals and policies... is a foolish idea. Instead, the two parties should be almost identical, so that the American people can throw the rascals out at any election without leading to any profound or extensive shifts in policy. Then it should be possible to replace it, every four years if necessary, by the other party, which will be none of these things but will still pursue, with new vigor, approximately the same basic policies."

That's exactly what we are facing today: progressive vs. progressive-light. And that's by design.

We told you about Joel Rogers a few weeks ago. He's one of these big powerful progressives who several of these bogus front organizations progressives use to funnel money around — as he was co-founding The New Party (a radical leftist party), he said this: "The Democratic Party has an abusive relationship with progressives. Democrats take our time and money and then almost always move to the right. The best way to end an abusive relationship is to develop the ability to leave it. We need a meaningful threat of exit from the Democratic Party — a new party that can punish unaccountable Democrats by running against them."

That's genius. That's almost like the Tea Party. I want you to read the whole article on this guy and what he says — you can do that at GlennBeck.com or sign up for my free e-mail newsletter and it will be included there.

This was the plan from the beginning. They didn't want to start a new party, they wanted to have a legitimate threat so that Democrats would actually have to listen to them, for fear that they'd eventually defect and defeat them with the New Party.

Well, guess what, Democrats, you've sold pieces of yourself time and time again until there is nothing left of you. Now all that's left is the hostile progressive part of you. The Democratic Party is over. It's the progressive party now. And Republicans are the traveling down the same path only at a slightly slower pace.

Any time President Obama is cornered on socialism questions or over spending, what does he — and accurately — point out? That Republicans do it too.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

OBAMA: The truth is, some of these comments when you actually ask, "Well, this is based on what? This notion that Obama's a socialist, for example?" Nobody can really give you a good answer, much less when they, you know, make...

HARRY SMITH, CBS NEWS: They would say mandating that people have to buy insurance or something like that.

OBAMA: The sort of plan proposed by current Republican nominee Mitt Romney? So, it doesn't make too much sense.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

That's not an answer to the question, but he's right. Republicans do it too. That's the problem: We have been tricked into boxing ourselves into Republicans or Democrats and defending those sides at all costs. All the while, they've both morphed into the same exact thing. We think we have a distinct choice, but it's really one in the same.

There used to be an option in this country; an option that believed in small government. An option that actually listened to what you said and even cared about it too.

Last night I showed you how progressives think they know better than you, but that's not a problem exclusive to the left. That's Republicans, too. Lindsey Graham was getting hammered by Tea Partiers for his left-leaning tendencies and they said they would vote him out. Graham's staff made this statement: "(Graham is) a thinking person's conservative. I expect him to do well among voters with IQs in triple digits."

See? He's smarter than you.

So, you are not really being presented with choice. You are not really being listened to because you are just the stupid, ignorant masses and Washington will do whatever it chooses to do.

Let's go back to Missouri. Tuesday night they had to vote on the insurance mandate in Barack Obama's health care bill. It was a close call: 71 percent to 29 percent voted against Obama's mandate. But do you think that's going to stop the administration from going forward? Of course not.

You've been ignored all the way; 59 percent still want to repeal the health care bill. This isn't about you — it's about them.

There's an interesting poll from Rasmussen: Eighty-four percent of citizens say the country is heading in the wrong direction. But in the political class — the ruling class — 67 percent feel we're on the right track. That's a 151-point spread. We're a republic; shouldn't that gap be closer?

Politicians are going in one direction, we are going in another. That's the French Revolution.

Fire them. You cannot spend 34 years in Congress and not be arrogant. You can't abide by the law when you are above it. We need term limits.

Who wins in the end: you or them? Let's take a look at the scoreboard:

>Who's getting extra power: you or the federal government? That would be them

>Who knows what's in the 2,500-page bills? That would be them

>Who is exempt from having to live under these laws? That would be them

>Who gets stuck with the bill? That would be us

>Who has to pay when they "fix" the inevitable problems with even more government? That would be us

It's both parties. One is a jet fighter the other is riding horse and buggy, but the destination is the same: Big spending, arrogance and corruption.

Do you remember when Nancy Pelosi promised to drain "the swamp" of big spending, corruption and arrogance back in 2006? Now she's claiming victory:

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

SPEAKER OF HOUSE NANCY PELOSI, D-CALIF.: When I came in, I said we'll drain the swamp. And we did. We passed the most sweeping ethics reform in the history of the Congress.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

Does anyone think we are better on corruption now? Even the slimiest of the slime in Washington, Barney Frank, said Maxine Waters was wrong. Washington views corruption as standard fare. The president said Charlie Rangel, facing multiple ethical charges, should retire now "with dignity." Dignity? If you or I did what he did we'd have been in jail.

Retire with dignity? Why didn't we just let Bernie Madoff retire with dignity? That's the division of the ruling class yet again. You go to jail, but they retire with dignity. Then, Al Sharpton comes out and says this:

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

REV. AL SHARPTON: If you begin to see a pattern of people being called on to be investigated, allegations that end up [to be] nothing. One would be very naive not to say "well, wait a minute, why should we rush to judgment?" Particularly when we have Charlie Rangel, who has done so much for his district and the country and Maxine Waters. And we've already seen two high-profile black leaders hit heavy by the media and then nothing's there.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

The more things change, the more things stay the same. I told you back in January that they would divide us on race. How did I know? It doesn't take a rocket scientist; just know history. When progressives get in trouble — backs against the wall — they do things like play the race card. That's why they fire people, because they think we might talk about their record. They are running scared! The case falls apart when the record is corrected.

Does anyone remember the accusations made by John Lewis? He was spat on and said the N word? We all heard that story, but did anyone see the correction from The New York Times? They removed this story because it's never been proved. Has anyone talked about that? No. The desired message was sent. Mission accomplished.

We're being divided. Put into boxes and kept there. If they can get 5 percent here and 7 percent there, pit us against each other, they get to keep their power.

America, we are being used.
