Who's Telling the Truth About Health Care?

If we're going to restore the country — to "fix" the problems we have — first and foremost we must be grounded in truth. The lies this administration are putting forth are piling up — almost as much as the flies. Here are just a few quick examples:

President Obama "rejected" the notion that the new health care bill was a "tax increase":

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS, ABC NEWS: Merriam Webster's Dictionary: Tax — "a charge, usually of money, imposed by authority on persons or property for public purposes."

PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: George, the fact that you looked up Merriam's Dictionary, the definition of tax increase, indicates to me that you're stretching a little bit right now.

STEPHANOPOULOS: But your critics say it is a tax increase.

OBAMA: My critics say everything is a tax increase. My critics say that I'm taking over every sector of the economy. You know that. Look, we can have a legitimate debate about whether or not we're going to have an individual mandate or not, but...

STEPHANOPOULOS: But you reject that it's a tax increase?

OBAMA: I absolutely reject that notion.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

Now, in an effort to defend the health care bill in federal court, the main argument that the Obama administration is using is the Anti-Injunction Act, which restricts courts from interfering with government's ability to collect taxes: "No suit for the purpose of restraining the assessment or collection of any tax shall be maintained in any court by any person, whether or not such person is the person against whom such tax was assessed."

The president, speaking to religious leaders, called out anyone who was saying this health care bill would federally fund abortions:

(BEGIN AUDIO CLIP)

OBAMA: There are some folks out there who are, frankly, bearing false witness.... You've heard that this is all going to mean government funding of abortion. Not true."

(END AUDIO CLIP)

Notice the use of the term "bearing false witness." He's trying to shame them. We showed you last week how Pennsylvania was the first state getting federal funds ($160 million) for the mandated high-risk pool, which covers abortions. New Mexico was the second state, but quickly decided to drop elective abortion from its list of covered procedures. And now Maryland is getting $85 million in federal funds for its federally mandated high-risk insurance pool, which will cover abortions.

We told you this health care bill was first and foremost about redistribution of wealth. We were said to be "obstructers of progress" and getting in the way of reform. But two days after the bill passed, The New York Times headline read: "In Health Bill, Obama Attacks Wealth Inequality."

Then Obama appointed Donald Berwick to head Medicare and Medicaid:

(BEGIN AUDIO CLIP)

DONALD BERWICK: Excellent health care is by definition re-distributional.

(END AUDIO CLIP)

President Obama said the "truth" about health care reform was that you'd be able to keep your doctor:

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIPS)

OBAMA: So here's the truth.... If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor.

OBAMA: Under the reform we seek, if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor.

OBAMA: If you like your doctor, you can keep seeing your doctor.

OBAMA: Here's a guarantee that I've made.... If you've got a doctor that you like, you will be able to keep your doctor.

OBAMA: No matter how we reform health care, I intend to keep this promise: If you like your doctor, you'll be able to keep your doctor.

(END VIDEO CLIPS)

This weekend, under the headline "Insurers Push Plans That Limit Choice of Doctor," a New York Times article notes: "That could come as a surprise to many who remember the repeated assurances from President Obama and other officials that consumers would retain a variety of health-care choices."

We told you that these were coming and we were called crazy. We see how it played out. Now, there's more coming that I believe will change everything. We'll probably be called crazy again. But look at the record and ask yourself: Who's telling the truth?
